Getting back in the saddle the wrong way around (For darcy)

There had been many times over the years that Ford had concluded that he did not like the organization he worked for. ( Their most recent stunt had cemented that. )

At precisely 8:00 AM, Darcy got out of bed, right foot hitting the floor first. She walked into the bathroom, undressed - folding everything and setting it down on the counter - turn on the water in the shower and stepped in; right foot first. She washed her right side, then her left, followed by her hair. After exiting - right foot first - she dried off, took her dirty clothes to the hamper and set them inside, still folded. Her morning went this way every single day. Same time, same ritual, right foot first. Never once did she falter and if she did, she was required to backtrack and fix her mistake. She hadn't made a mistake in a long time ( ... )

Around ten or so Darcy got a spectator. A large crow had suddenly taken place by her window, peering in. It was, of course, Ford. Just going up and knocking on the door without finding things out first seemed like a bad idea, so he thought he'd spy a bit first.

So he sat there, watching her draw careful and precise lines. He also concluded that the way her face was lit up sharply from below wasn't doing her any favors.

Well, time for a test. While reading her as far as he was able to without looking her in the eyes he started lowering the mental shields he had around his own mind, to let some emotion through to see if she would react to it. He couldn't help that there were a degree of annoyance there, but there were also some curiosity. Like looking at a mouse in a labyrinth, that kind of curiosity.

She was perfectly content at her light table. Drawing maps had always been one of her favorite things. It was easy. It was also clean and exact. There wasn't anything that could be changed. A map was a map and in her field it was easy to get access to satellite pictures of the globe in the even she wanted to make sure that her maps were more than perfect. She never settled for less ( ... )

...woah! Okay, yes, this lady had problems. Big ones. Ford got that much from the slight reading he was able to do. And she clearly wasn't responding well to the things that went on in his head, so he quickly closed himself off again. It was creepy to feel himself echoing off her, plus getting her own discomfort.

Okay, so how to go about this, then? He sat watching her for a while longer as he tried to figure it out. Should he just grab the bull by the horns? Ah, but that might have some bad effects on this one.

In the end he decided to follow her around that day, and see how much he could learn.
