It wasn’t clear when or how it had started to all go downhill. The day that their friendship had started to break was the day Optimus would never remember because he just didn’t know when it had started. There were events that he remembered, little things really, but things that started to cement in his processor that this mech and femme weren’t the Autobots he thought they were. Of course that didn’t mean that Optimus thought that they were Decepticons, just that they didn’t… quite fit into the category Optimus held in his memory banks and spark of what an Autobot should be; What a Cybertronian carrying that name should stand for.

They weren’t poor by any stretch of the imagination, in fact their creators were the average middle class on Cybertron but Elita-1 and Sentinel still had their juvenile instincts that stealing and coercing lunch credits from underclassmen was okay and right to do. Optimus participated when Sentinel gave him a hard nudge and glanced at one quivering underclassmen. He had to do what his friend wanted him to do, didn’t he? So he stole the poor kid’s lunch credits and watched as the little thing ran to the bathroom to cry with the others. Sentinel and Elita-1 laughed but Optimus felt sourness settle in his spark at the sight of the credits snuggled in his servo.

When he met Blackarachnia for the first time, vorns later, watched Sentinel’s xenophobia drive her away, his spark ached and he wondered if this was the ‘karma’ that Sari had explained to him when talking about her own belief system. Was this punishment from Primus for doing what he had done vorns ago, or was this just fate? Blackarachnia would never accept her new self, Sentinel would never accept her, and Optimus didn’t know what would happen if she tried to come near him. He knew he wouldn’t be able to hurt her, knew that the sight of her wouldn’t disgust him in the way she thought it would. The sight of her would make his spark cringe for all the things he had done to other bots under her amused watchful eye. Being the leader of a team now, meant that he always regretted what he had done in his past.

He remembered especially one little cybertronian, barely out of sparklinghood, and they had tormented him mercilessly. In fact, he became Sentinel and Elita-1’s favorite new target for that year. He looked just like Bumblebee but Optimus knew he wasn’t because the little bot they had tormented every day for a year was offline. His name had been Grinder and he’d brought a blaster to their graduation. Optimus had been the one to shoot him down. There, that was the true day their friendship had finally crumpled under the pressure, not the day Elita-1 died, but the day Optimus had shot an innocent for friends that weren’t really friends, for two bots who made his spark cringe and writhe in shame when he was around them, for friends that had never been friends and would never be again.
