My ex-boyfriend who is in prison was diagnosed with a conduct disorder as a child..he grew up in several abusive homes (including foster homes) and ended up hooked on meth, heroine, etc...he was tested when he was first arrested and scored high in the DSM-IV..but after he got "clean" he became more balanced..he started making friends in prison and they helped to "change" him...he still had some sociopathic "tendencies" but I don't think he'd be classified as a sociopath, if tested again.
It also depends on how honest the person. I can pass lie detector tests and seem like a perfectly normal, happy, bubbly cheerleader..and then in the blink of an eye, be a "monster", wanting to kill someone.
It just depends on the person, their environment growing up (especially from around age 5-12...that's when the 'damage' really gets done...especially during puberty if there's a sexual aspect to it), how its dealt with, if at all, how soon after...neurological factors...even genetics....a lot plays a part, so it's not really known for certain but from my experience, there are "levels" (but a sociopath is still a sociopath...some just aren't as "bad" as others)
I'm always interested in the "levels" and types myself because, well, in my experience there are differences...I always wonder when people officially cross the line into "sociopath" too. I mean when do "tendencies" become the disease, I wonder. What seems "horrible" and "cruel" to some might seem perfectly reasonable to others so how does one decide when not terribly vested become apathy or a dark sense of humor become amusement at the expense of others?
...Right, so babbling and probably boring you now, haha!

If that makes sense?
