Divert and channels your interests into a profession or hobby that is considered socially productive, yet still lets you fulfill your needs in some way. If you can.
I have so many interests though...sexual sadism and homicide dominate my thoughts...I've tried drawing to "channel it out"...I'm currently writing a novel that will "let some of it out"...but it never really goes away.
I have all sorts of paraphilias too...I doubt there's a profession or hobby that will ever fully satisfy me the way ...that one thing..would.
Paraphilias tend to be precursor to sexual homicide. (yayyy)
Be careful with 'channelling', the catharsis method is a load of crap, it tends to stimulate whatever thoughts you're trying to get rid of, increase arousal [not necessarily sexual, but physical] and can actually make you much more likely to do whatever it is you're trying to avoid.
Yeah...that happens to me...especially during sex..."normal" sex bores me...I want blood and violence (because I went through puberty while being raped violently and "learned" that "that's how it should be", I guess)...and if I start drifting into my "fantasy land" during the act, I feel the urges to change that fantasy to reality growing.
Whoa, that sounds dangerous! That's why I think that Ted Bundy's final interview actually has some merit. Like, yeah, he was completely shifting blame from himself, and obviously pornography did not make him kill people (Like, obviously what happened to you during puberty had a greater effect than the actual fantasies.), but it does have a tendency to push people in a certain direction.
I wouldn't give much credit to Bundy on the honesty scale...that preacher pretty much put words into his mouth and Ted played along...playing games like he always did.
Watch the entire interview sometime and pay close attention...Ted starts out pretty honest but by the end, he and the preacher-dude are "in sync" and basically just stating shit that the guy could then later use to try to ban porn because of his religious beliefs.
I remember reading in a few books that no one ever found a shred of "porn" anywhere in any of Ted's residences or vehicles...all they found were a couple of magazines for Teenaged girls of uniforms and outfits (and girls wearing them)....but he could have easily looked at those and seen whatever he wanted to see (dead bodies, probably)
Oh god, no, it's weird that it's the one thing I don't like about Bundy. He lied SO much. I'm not saying he was telling the truth, when he started crying, and was saying about how bad he felt about what he did, I was just like 'seriously??'. The preacher was using him, obviously, and it just feels like such a waste that THAT was his final interview. But I was saying it had some merit because there was an underlying truth about porn - just not one that fit with the message that stupid preacher wanted to convey [oh god I wanted to bash his brains in by the end of it.]
Have you read Conversations with a Killer? Awesome book, but my god it's frustrating.
Yeah, I think that pornography among serial killers is just to facilitate the fantasies - probably before they start killing. Because after they know what it's really like, and instead relive the actual event instead of imagining a hypothetical one.
I've read every book on Bundy ever. Including the most recent one (just came out last year)
My favorite is "The Phantom Prince" written by his ex-girlfriend...reading it was like reading something an ex of mine would write about me. It was weird.
I guessed as much! The whole third person thing in it was genius, but I wanted to slap bundy by the end and tell him to wise up.
Haha, it sounds like an entertaining read! I need to buy more serial killer books, they're hard to find here, internet's the only place I can really buy them... plus there's tonnes of conflicting information out there.
Oh, actually, a question - about Bundy. You'd probably be the best person to ask! Did he choose victims that specifically looked like his ex-girlfriend? You know, long brown hair parted in the middle. I always assumed he did, but the other day my lecturer told our class that it's just a myth floating around the internet because the media used photo's where a lot of the girls looked similar, when Bundy never actually admitted to any preference.
In most cases he did...except at the very end of his run when he'd escaped and gone to Florida. By that point he was so manic and craving blood that he bludgeoned any woman he could find (I believe a few were blondes)
but when he was organized, yes...even the young 12-year-old girl sort of looked like her, but I think he was still "messed up" then..and I truly feel he wasn't proud of himself for that one..he'd never gone that young before.
As for books..look up one on Hadden Clark online...I haven't read it yet but I've read about him elsewhere and seen a special on him and he's one of the most interesting killers (he pretended to be a woman..would dress up as a woman...drew pictures when he wrote to police from prison...acted very strange during interogations...etc.) hard to explain but it was very intriguing.
And you can usually find used copies of "The Phantom Prince" on eBay or Amazon.com (they don't print it anymore so most are in poor condition. I paid a ton for a copy that was in near-perfect condition)
I think the point my lecturer was getting at was that Bundy never actually admitted that this was the reason for his choice. But I mean... it's Ted Bundy... of course he wouldn't admit to anything like that. Will do! The more weird the serial killer, the better! Sounds pretty damn odd!
Criminal Minds often refers to "triggers" that cause people to kill...
from my understanding that's pretty much true...
Ted Bundy's first "trigger" was finding out his family lied and that he was a "bastard son"...(and his "father" (actually his grandfather) was also abusive, which he never admitted)...he complained and was embarrassed about being a "bastard" often...but he still went on to college and did okay...
then his girlfriend dumped him because he was "too immature"..so he changed classes..got into politics..and impressed the pants off of her...they got back together...she fell in love with him..he proposed to her...(in Cailifornia) then went back to college in Washington..and..I think she never heard from him again...he "got her back"..he "hurt her" like she "hurt him" and shortly thereafter, the killings began.
My lecturer always uses Ted Bundy as an example of a serial killer with a 'normal' childhood. I mean, okay, it was no where near as bad as say, henry lee lucas, but I mean - it's not like you can't tell where this overwhelming resentment towards women came from. He's definitely the best example of the whole 'trigger' 'stressor' thing.
His "sister" was actually his Mother...and he still cared for her but he resented her for lying to him (similar to why I started to hate my mother)...and his childhood wasn't "normal"...his grandfather was abusive...his mother finally (after years) moved him away from it...at one point, I forget how old he was, he placed knives all around a relative (maybe his "sister"/mother???) while she was sleeping..so...SOMETHING "warped" his brain somewhere during his youth.
I honestly have no idea where he pulled the 'normal' childhood thing from, because read anything about Bundy's past and it's obviously not normal. I THINK it was... I'll say an aunt, or a babysitter... maybe a cousin... It was someone minding him when everyone else was away...=/
He was mentioning it in relation to some theory that serial killing is actually just an extreme form of normal human behavior. I'm not buying it to be honest - I mean, I know that not all serial killers are psychotic, but I still don't think it's normal behavior.
It's not normal BEHAVIOR but it IS instinct, I think...we're all still, to some degree, primative...predators...we protect our property...we'd kill someone if they tried to kill us....etc...everyone has it in them to kill...some are just more prone to do it...it comes more easily to some....for others, something "triggers" it.
That is what I did.
