Dear Polly,

One of the saddest public misperceptions is that you are weak if you have to go on medication. However, anxiety attacks are a pretty serious indicator that something is awry within your physical body (which may be induced by psychological stress). However, the more attacks you have, the harder it is to unlearn the panic attack. It is NOT your fault. Just like a person that has to take an antihistamine during hay fever season, your reasons for medication do not make you a person of lower worth. Being worred all the time about what others think is also a form of social anxiety disorder, and it is very good to be taking anxiolytics for that because it will allow you to be able to be more competent and feel more competent, which will hopefully augment your self-worth.

You are a wonderful person and don't let the misconceived stigmas of being weaker for having to take medication make you think otherwise!

ps- Relapse is very common among people with anxiety/depression/etc. There is a neurochemical basis for this involving the wrong information being stored into your long term memory and extra sensitivity to environmental cues that can retrigger the memory during a seemingly latent period.
