Today I went to school for 5 hours or so, long enough to prepare for and conduct a capstone interview for my Legal Interviewing & Counseling class and then to discover that I could not get my head in the game enough to study at all. Fortunately Fi called to tell me that for Employee Appreciation Day she was getting out of work at 2 p.m. and did I want her to pick me up? I said Yes please!. So she picked me up at 3, and we went shopping!
The Barristers' Ball, aka Law School Prom, is on March 24th, and this year I have committed to attend. It helps that I think I will (almost certainly) get an award for being a finalist at the Linda Anderson. (Eli McCann is going to sweep all the other awards; this has already been decided). So we went to the mall to find me a dress, and after being horrified at the prices at Macy's and the selection at Dress Barn, we finally achieved success at--of all places--Mr. Mac's. Which is normally known for missionary suits, but they had a selection of women's dresses on sale in front, and some of them were very pretty. A few were even semi-formal! The one I chose is a silvery pewter grey, with a deep, pleated U-shaped bodice and cap sleeves. It has a dark purple sash around the waist, and the knee-length skirt is a semi-full A-line, with three thin bands of dark purple at the hem. It is really very pretty--and it was under $50. Awesome.
We then trekked around for another hour looking for shoes, and ultimately left disappointed. Fortunately
Zappos.com has come to the rescue with
these metallic-silver Calvin Kleins. I am excited for them to come. Hopefully they'll work!
This is now more than I've ever spent on an outfit in my life. But hey, I never went to either of my high school proms. A girl's allowed to dress up once in her life, right?
day 3 - your views on drugs and alcohol
Anyone who's heard of the Word of Wisdom will not be surprised by this. I do not consume drugs or alcohol; I even avoid caffeinated drinks, although just about everyone else at the law school is hooked on Diet Coke. (I tried it once, on a red-eye flight back from D.C. with the Traveling Team; it did nothing for me.) I avoid energy drinks, coffee, and tea, aside from one sip of green tea in a Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. (It tasted like grass.)
I don't object to other people consuming legal intoxicants, so long as they aren't Mormon and aren't therefore breaking sacred covenants. However, I've got to confess that I don't like being around people when they're drunk, and I've never knowingly been around someone who was high. I dislike the loss of inhibitions that intoxication brings. My interactions with intoxicated people have mostly taught me that people get loud, obnoxious, sloppy, and smelly when they're drunk. It's not funny: it's sad. I hate to see people lose control of themselves, and I can't understand why so many college kids think it's fun to get drunk off their heads and pass out in a puddle of their own vomit. Sober parties are so much more fun.
Plus, 4 of the 6 trials I've done in Trial Advocacy have involved someone getting drunk and injuring or killing someone else. Stay sober, kids, and save a life!
