NEW YORK (1010 WINS) --The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's 2019 annual homeless assessment report to congress, reveals that New York State now has the highest rate of homelessness in the country.
New York beat out the state of Hawaii as they fall to second place.
The report, which is certified by HUD Secretary Ben Carson, is based on each state's point-in-time count, and annually attempts to calculate the number of homeless individuals in the nation.
In Hawaii, 44.9 in every 10,000 people were experiencing homelessness in 2019, according to the report. The national average is 17 people per 10,000. New York's rate is 46.4. There were 6,412 homeless people counted in Hawaii in 2019, a decrease of 19% from 2016.
"The Trump Administration is committed to working with local communities to find effective ways to end homelessness," Sec. Carson said. "HUD will continue these efforts to help end the suffering of our most vulnerable neighbors in the most compassionate way possible."
The report found that nationally, 567,715 people experienced homelessness on a single night in January 2019.
That number rose by 14,885 people since 2018.
According to the report, homelessness among veterans decreased by 2.1 percent in 2019 and homelessness among families with children declined by 4.8 percent.
Chronic or long-term homelessness increased by 6.5 percent among individuals compared to 2018 but decreased by 6.6 percent since 2010.

Мне ДиБлазио со своей толерастией не нравится, но, надо отдать ему должное, проблему с бомжами он все же решает лучше многих, учитывая, что в городе их в течениии года более ста тысяч (около 60 000 единовременно, некоторые то находят жилье, то теряют в течении года). Всего в Америке немногим более полумиллиона бомжей, которые конкретно в этот период времени живут непосредственно под открытым небом на улице и их число растет.
