Wednesday Morning, the Brownstone

May 17, 2006 15:19

As nice as it was to sleep in her own bed, Kiki rather thought it would be better to sleep in her own body. And although she would never, ever, have said it aloud, she also felt that her first time having a boy in her bed had not at all or even remotely been close to what she might have ever expected ( Read more... )

Mid-Morning Magic Lesson! kikidelivers May 18 2006, 03:51:21 UTC
Out in the yard after pancakes, Kiki-Yazoo stood with her broom leaning against one shoulder. It was time for a flying lesson.

Yazoo-Kiki rubbed at his face. "I managed to get airborne and did get forward motion but," he pointed to the hedges and shrugged. "Control is the next thing, I think."

"You got aloft? Why, that's more than half the work right there!" Kiki grinned. "But yes, control is quite necessary. It's a matter of willpower."

She spent the next five minutes describing the basic mechanics of flight-by-broom. "More than anything, you need to stay focused. If you let yourself get distracted, the magic you use will disperse back out into the general currents of magic that are around us. Always keep at least some part of your mind tapped into that magical stream. Then, it's just a matter willing yourself the direction you wish to go. The harder you will it, the faster you'll go."

"Right. Concentration. Will. Right." Yazoo took a deep breath and nodded. Holding his hand out for the broom, he figured he'd give it another shot.

Kiki handed him the broom. "For now, just focus on hovering a few feet off the ground, just to get the feel of how you have to channel the magic," Kiki advised. "You can grab my shoulder to keep yourself steady if you want."

He was about to protest that Kiki probably couldn't easily keep him stabilized until he remembered, his body was strong enough and he huffed out a breath with another nod. "Hovering."

Like Jiji had shown him before and Kiki verified he leveled out the broom and sat on the brush. One more breath and he concentrated on hovering. Just lifting.

He could feel it, a small tickle that ran through the center of his body, something channeling...rushing...flowing and the broom lifted him from the ground. His brows furrowed as he concentrated no only on hovering now, but on keeping it at one height, not waivering around, his hand firmly holding to Kiki's shoulder.

When he felt like he had it, Yazoo slowly released his grip and held to the broomstick, his face a mask of intensity as he looked straight ahead.

"That's it...steady," Kiki coached, her face blossoming into a broad smile when he released her shoulder and balanced carefully in the air. "Yes, that's it! Well done you!

"Ok, now that you've got the hang of that, you need to keep the focus that holds you in the air, but now add to it just a hint of the desire to move forward. You should feel the magic shift, almost..." She hunted for an analogy, "almost like a thread is pulling the broom. A very small thread."

"Thread, right." When Yazoo spoke, the broom dipped, and he realized he'd lost concentration. Okay. So no talking while in the air.

Like she suggested, he envisioned, and desired the thread, pulling at the broom to move him forward. In slow increments, he moved, a lazy hovering movement forward.

Once he felt the connection, and there was no other word for it, he remembered what she said about desiring more speed and did. Much like easing onto an accelerator, Yazoo eased into his desire and moved even faster, even if it was still slow poke speed.

Okay. So he had height and movement. But how to turn? Giving her analogy a little tweak and envisioning the thread pulling the front of the broomstick to the left he waivered in the air but made a slow lazy arc in the air in a semicircle.

"See? You hardly need me at all!" Kiki exclaimed, laughing. "With a little practice, that should be enough to get you around town. I'd suggest not going too high, just in case something breaks your concentration and you can't get it back again," she advised. "Staying below the roofline, too, in the south part of the city will keep you from drawing attention."

"Right. Below the roofline...got it." Yazoo managed to actually talk and fly at the same time. Bonus.

Laughing that he was finally getting the hang of it, he sped up a little.

The speed picked up again and he grew more confident. It was much liking riding his bike, he realized and with a wider smile, he really could get the hang of it.

In a reckless move, he swooped down to a hover and leapt off. "This...has possibilities," he said, waving his hand over the broom.

"You're definitely the best student I've ever had," Kiki observed. She wondered a bit what she looked like when she was flying. "I'm glad you're enjoying it! Now, what else? I suppose I should give you a rundown of how some of my easiest spells work, just so you don't accidently set something off. Or, alternately, so you can deliberately set something off."

She looked down from Yazoo's height at her own small body. "Which would probably be a really good idea if you're planning on returning to the Flats before this gets fixed."

"Yeah. I think at this point I'm not going to be able to handle Nightmare like this. Could break your wrists," he said, flexing his hands, or rather, Kiki's hands.

"What kind of stuff will you teach me?" Because Yazoo really had no idea just what magic a witch could do. He was an open book.

Yazoo nodded. This was actually becoming fun. It was far different than what he or his brothers could do. They required materia and this? Seemed to be inherent into who Kiki was.

He took a deep breath and let it out, closing his eyes so he could envision again. In his mind's eye, he could see his body, see the bubble forming around him. Funny why that bubble was almost a pink. He didn't think he was a pink kind of guy. Maybe that was just Kiki's body memory or something.

He'll just make sure not to mention it to his brothers. The short legs are already going to be the bane of his existance with them.

Kiki waited patiently as Yazoo concentrated, his eyes shut.

After a moment, she uttered softly, as to not disrupt his focus, "Now, I'm going to test your shield. Keep concentrating, and you should feel the pressure. It should prevent me from being able to touch you."

Stretching out her hand, Kiki extended her arm until she felt, faintly, under her fingertips, the thickening of the air around Yazoo that indicated he had had at least some success. With the strength of Yazoo's body behind her, she could easily continue through and gently tap him on his - her own, really - shoulder, but the resistance was definitely there. "Good," Kiki nodded. "Very good! That should do something to provide you some protection, at least."
