On Friday, November 12, 2004, God sent His angel to deliver Lucius Thomas, Sr. to his eternal resting place. Lucius, also fondly remembered as “Judge”, was born on June 13, 1930 in Opelousas, LA to the late Antoine Thomas and Aileen Prince.
“Judge” was baptized at an early age at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. He later became a member of St. Jules Catholic Church of Franklin, LA under the leadership of Father Hanes. He held several jobs in his lifetime before retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Peter Cleaver.
Lucius was united in matrimony to Sophia Mitchell Thomas on March 20, 1954. To this union eight children were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers; Gwen Thomas, Antoine Thomas, Jr., Walter Thomas, Dewy Thomas, Laylen Thomas, Orel Thomas, and Wilfred Thomas; one sister, Cornelia T. Melligan; two sons; David Mitchell, and George Willis II.
Lucius was devoted to family and friends. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Mrs. Sophia M. Thomas; daughters, Ms. Mary A. Thomas of Beaumont, TX, Ms. Sophia Willis, Ms. Christine Thomas, Mrs. Mary A (Lionel) Trye, Ms. Madeline Teresa Thomas, Ms. Enez T Page, and Ms. Jennifer Navy all of Franklin, LA; Mrs. Diane (Kenneth Bowers of Baldwin, LA; Mrs. Deidre (Mark) Stevens and Mrs. Earl Lee (Terrell) Trahan, both of Lafayette, LA; sons; Lucius Thomas, Jr. of Corpus Christi, TX; Edward C. Thomas, Harry (Christine) Lyles, and Willie Mitchell, all of Franklin, LA; and Lucius Antoine Martin of Austin, TX; one sister, Mrs. Argentine Taylor of Opelousas, LA; one godchild, Alton Thomas; 44 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends that realize that earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal.

There were a lot of things wrong with this obituary. The major one being that Lu’s half-sisters (who planned the funeral) failed to mention Lu’s mother, Janice Martin, and the many, many years (40+) that her and Lucius Sr. spent together. That was just plain wrong. Lucius and Janice had four children together: 3 daughters, Jennifer, Earl Lee, and Deidre, and one son, Lucius.
