i spent 4 hours and 50 minutes of class today staring at my painting. i spent the other ten minutes painting. i think i like this painting, but i know deep in my heart of hearts that it is irrelevant in these modern days when the artists use newfangled contraptions like the tele-vision, victrola gramophone, and daguerreotype in "concept-oriented art."
"later the jazz men were followed by the painters, a big, hulking breed of hard-drinking men who spoke in oils and came on very paternal and sexy..." diane di prima wrote that in '69 and she was talking about the fifties. i like the passage, even though i can't function after three drinks. as for the paternal and sexy oh lawd no. i'm big, but too nervous and awkward to sufficiently hulk.
