Anything I ramble and try to show in this panel is from my area of tumblr. Everyone experiences a different tumblr. My tumblr is not your tumblr. Your tumblr is not your mom's tumblr. It's a microblogging platform that allows users to post multimedia, so it could be text, images, links, conversations, audio, video, and many combinations of those. You choose who to follow; you can blacklist anything you don't want to have on your dashboard. Everyone experiences a tumblr depending on who you follow, time of day when you log on, what's in the news, or if someone fannish you follow has recently become obsessed with a new show. Your live feed is a living thing that changes, so in this panel always assuming that I'm talking about my own corner of tumblr, which is different from your tumblr, which is different from everyone's tumblr.
such_heights recently broke down vidding into celebration, analysis, transformation, and critique. I agree. The same is true for tumblr, with an added category or subcategory of blissful utter nonsense. Tumblr is a great place for shenanigans as well as serious business. I'm going to touch on how the images bring out parallels and can help you visualize a vid, how scrounging for mundane seeming images can create the life of a story, how tumblr achieves those beautiful Unrealized Realities for AU vids, all of which lead to a tumblr aesthetic, which I will try to break down simply.
My corner of tumblr uses stock images and textures liberally. Sometimes the actual characters themselves (meaning the actors) are secondary in the piece, like a well timed after thoughts. At times some of the art can look like it's been found in my gramma's attic, getting it a strange musty and kitschy feel. Text is a well developed tool for communication in tumblr images and/or along side them. Put a flower crown on it! I promise to only name drop one non-tumblr artist in this panel.
One of my favorite uses of tumblr is doing my homework for me for vidding. It's great for research because chances on are, if you surf the right tags or the right people, there's a visual analysis and critique that will provide meat for a vid or help you along if you are starving for it.
From my own vidding specifically I was studying the lyrics and brainstorming interpretations for an Orphan Black vid when I saw these gifsets and realized I needed a section of Kira and her influence on Sarah and the other clones for a lyrics about "banging in my chest." Someone could easily take these gifset of Amy and Rory as research for a vid. This parallel I had already planned to use in an Erica vid, but I had to save the gifset because it was so perf. Someone pulled together all the instances where Effy looked to camera and smiled at the end of an episode. Again, could be research for visuals in Scully and Mulder vid. I have this saved as reference when I need clips of them together in the same shot and I can't remember. These perfectly outline some of what I want to hit on in a Hannibal vid. Fannish tumblr as a whole is talented at spotting visual narrative strands and collecting up ways characters interact on a similarity level.
When discussing the aesthetics of tumblr, I debated where to begin and I settled on the fandom for Welcome to Night Vale, which a podcast for a fictional town's radio show. The array of visuals is almost completely fan-created and driven. Some visuals are created in a dark tone, while other artists lean towards the more whimsical "Pushing Daises"-like atmosphere in the source.
The fandom artists are provided with the audio and they've created traditional art images, picspams weaved together using images from other tv shows, movies, photo shoots, as well as stock photos and their own photos. Practically any image is fair game for use in the art.
Whether instinctively or not, many tumblr artist from my corner emulate a Saul Bass minimalist style. The tumblr art aesthetic is often a sophisticated and distinctive look, which happens to use the pretty to frost over the more wild and cracktastic nature of the subject, which could fall into a static or dull presentation without imagination.
The fandom has created fancast picspams as well. Without visuals in the source, anyone can be Dana the intern - or her double. There are many visual markers from the source that those familiar with it would proclaim, "oh yeah, that's Erika changing a light" or "of course, that's the Whispering Forest," even though those images look different. It's shared visualization from experiencing the same source in varied ways and expressing it in different aesthetics.
The podcast of Welcome to Night Vale itself, as far as I know, has only visually presented logo-type things on the website from which to draw direct inspiration, which is seen in the way purple, green, and grey are utilized with more frequency than some other colors in the tumblr art.

There's a subgroup within tumblr's Supernatural fandom that reminds me of the Welcome to Night Vale fandom in the sense that they're both fiercely passionate online groups that create individualized and stylized pieces of art. This subgroup of tumblr's Supernatural fandom has created a universal view of the character Claire Novak.
Most of vidding fandom can relate to the plight of a viewer's frustration with a story line. There's a group that have intricately orchestrated a parallel story line for a sort of proclaimed Team Free Will 2.0 involving a younger generation of hunters, mainly Ben, Claire, Jesse, with additional Haley, Tommy, Aaron, Hunter, and many others who were mainly episode characters that have continued to live their lives as the series progressed. The most visually interesting subfandom of that subgroup is the one for Claire Novak related things. She's grown up killing angels and looking like a fierce little hipster.
Visually I collected images from a few artist that tend to create the most reblogged and discussed pieces of art. Not only are the older characters recasted with different actors, they are also used by others in non-fannish posts to make them into fannish posts, seemingly to give a mundane image meaning in fandom, which pieces together a life for Claire Novak. I know a lot of fans are enjoying Supernatural less and are watching it more as an obligation. It's not true everywhere, but from what I've see there's more critique of the show than there is of celebration. I assume that the lack of interest is coming from the underdeveloped interesting female characters. In certain corners of tumblr those characters are visually celebrated. The same with the underused story lines of late. Specifically, there's a group, subgroup, in fandom that assumes season 9 is going to suck and probably won't include the types of content that they want. So a few artist did their own. They focused visually on interesting black and white contrasts, motion, as well the use of constructed dialog. The images are often hazy, blurry, with manipulated lighting. I wanted to use a lot of Supernatural images for this panel because there's plenty of visual source that is being transformed into something new and exciting in that fandom. Supernatural's been on for such a long time, but it can still come across fresh with somebody else's perspective and talents.
I mean, this stuff is pretty gorg, right? And it could be translated into a vidding perspective as well.

There are also these fantastic genreswap and genderAU gifsets and images that lay out possibilities to imagine in your mind, which could be for AU vids. Genreswap or genre AU, however you say it, is probably the most visually arresting for some people. There are visual guides that have been embedded into our brains that signal where we are being taken when we watch something. The sudden cuts to bloody gore telegraph horror, monochromatic or mutes tones suggest a thriller, you can tell a lot from the choice to change the saturation as well. Black and white or sepia tones generally hint at a 1920s/30s era, which is fully utilized in this vid... Specific sources can be manipulated to match as well. Either sincerely or humorously, like a welcomed whoopee cushion to a dramatic source.
AU vids, gifset, or picspams employ a somewhat different set of narrative tools than a general summary. Modifying the image, as well as the sequencing of the images, becomes important in how the images are viewed. Much of the time transitions, frame edits, visual overlays, zooms, masks, other effects, cutting techniques, and more are used to set the point of view apart from others. The visual continuity of the original source is either adhered to or melded into the aesthetics of the external source that's used. A melded universe within the work is created where the sources are generally cropped, the frame itself cropped, to avoid visuals that are not congruent to the created universe. Like a toaster in a time before toast. Or a car or architecture, whatever.
Overlays and masks are often used to lend credibility to the melded universe by smooshing more than one character together in a frame for generated interaction. Or artfully pasting a character elsewhere. These tools aren't always needed to create a shared universe as with this vid clip... Visual sameness across the board can be usually achieved quicker if the images are all homogenized one tone, like sepia or black and white or a push to green, or a push red even, which is used prevalently. The hope is that the viewers can suspend their disbelief for a moment and sink into the images.
There are many gifsets that pull in outside source to set out flashbacks that might not otherwise be available in the primary source. Either the flashbacks weren't fleshed out visually or they're used to create a new reality by borrowing from other sources. Much like what vidding already does for AU vids, obviously. There are also amazing gifsets and picspams where the fan recasts the roles using different actors/actresses for various motivations, like changing the gender, un-whitewashing a cast, or aging a character to be younger or older.
When discussing AU, I have to mention genderswap, genderAU, genderbending, there's a lot of names. It comes with the same visual cues as other AU with the addition of how the notion of gender is perceived in the universe of the vid. Use of certain clips, coloring, saturation, etc. can denote changes, especially in how the clips are edited. Assuming a binary system, there are genderwaps where typically the male to female swap leads to sexualized females due to the source, so it's important to keep that in mind when editing. Is it an aesthetic the vidder wants to keep or creatively edit out? Same for how rigidly gender constructs are adhered to. When gathering gifsets and such from tumblr it was interesting to note that the majority of genderAU was binary male to female. I couldn't find a single Deanna Winchester that was not Amber Heard, so it seems fandom has agreed on exactly one thing.
