Every Day Is a Reminder by
ishie
Rating: PG; 7,297 words; Calvin/Susie
Summary: There's a certain fear that some children share as they grow up, that whatever they do will never be as good as what's come before. Among all the other things he will ever be, Calvin has never been one of those kids.
It's this really cute and fun story about growing up and the evolution of Calvin and Susie's relationship. I really like the progression of this story, its formatting, how the work is divided up and the way in which quotes are used in this. I have a lot of love for the depiction of Calvin and Susie in this, especially when they're in school together; they're both really familiar and their interactions are a lot of fun and very realistic. I knew kids like them and they're both very much people they could have grown up into. The story's just this wonderful sweet growth.

Theories About Nuclear Winter by hollycomb
Rating: PG-13; 18,000 words; Calvin/Susie
Summary: When Calvin finally sorts out his feelings for Susie his timing is not great.
This story.
norah recced it a couple of years ago and commented that it read like this utterly fantastic young adult novel, and that is so, so what it is; it's wonderful. There's this excellent melding of the Calvin of the comic's fantasy world with the experience of being a teenager; his fantasy world has grown with him and is very much true both to Calvin and his being a teenager. He and Susie are both such teens in this; it, is, really, this wonderful YA piece and it's truly lovely prose. I kept pulling lines out of it to just kind of admire when I was rereading it; it's lovely.

Preparation and Fireless [from The Apocalypse According to C (with some Help from S and H)] by
recessional
Rating: PG-13; 1,062 and 6,122 words; Gen
"You're sure?" Calvin asked aloud, as he slid his wallet into his jeans pocket and pulled his hoodie on over his head. "I mean - " he trailed off, at a loss for words. "You're really sure?"
The juxtaposing of dark sci-fi with the source material is really interesting. It's a serious business Calvin and Hobbes story about the apocalypse. It has a Hobbes, covers how Calvin and Hobbes and Susie all grow up, has these bits of humour and hope, covers grief, and has a creepy apocalypse. It's this really interesting combination of things, which lends it, for a story about the apocalypse with a talking tiger in it, an impressive amount of realism.
