I've been dabbling a little bit with the Doom 3 editor. Man, this is going to take some getting used to.
It's not that it's any harder to make levels for than other modern FPS games like Quake 3 or Unreal (in fact, it's almost exactly like making Quake 3 levels, but with more emphasis on meshes). It's the lighting. Everywhere I've looked, everyone says they recommend having no more than three light sources hitting a surface at once, and if you can help it, no more than two. Do you have ANY IDEA how hard it is to get lighting looking good while having less than three lights hitting most surfaces? It's no wonder they made Doom 3 so dark. There's almost no other way to do it if you don't want the lighting to look like crap (or have the framerate chug on most computers).
Still, I'm determined that I'm going to master this engine, it's just going to take a lot of practice. I've been wanting to get back into single player mapping for awhile, because the last game I did any serious single player level design for was the original Doom and Doom 2. We'll see if I'm actually able to finish anything with this, considering my usual attention span with the projects I start. That's something I really need to work on if I plan on ever getting into professional game design. Nobody's going to want to hire someone with a gazillion unfinished projects.
