Now that I'm getting paychecks and I actually have money again, I finally got around to getting Doom 3 today. Damn, this game is awesome. I'm nearing the end of the Alpha labs (just got my objective to go to Enpro), and so far I'm having a blast. The graphics are, of course, beautiful, and it runs quite well on my system at the medium graphics setting, all the advanced options except anti-aliasing enabled, at 1152x864 resolution (the lowest I could stand without anti-aliasing).
Honestly, I don't think any of the complaints people have had with the game apply with me, at least at this point. I love the dynamic that switching between the weapons and the flashlight adds to the gameplay (and maybe it's just because I have a bright monitor, but the game has been plenty bright at the default brightness setting. There are a lot of dark corners and alcoves that I need the flashlight to peek into to make sure there aren't any zombies or imps hiding in them, but other than the few purposefully dark areas which require the flashlight, I haven't really needed it much for finding my way around. IMO, they got the lighting balance spot on).
The way people were complaining about the monster placement, I thought there were going to be zombies popping out of hidden cabinets in nearly every other wall, and every time you picked up an armor shard, something would jump out at you. I've actually found this to not really be the case much at all, so far. Sure, there've been a few monsters hiding in storage closets, and maybe a couple of times where monsters would appear from picking up items, but most of the time when I think it's obvious that picking something up or doing something is going to make monsters appear, it doesn't. Maybe I should thank the whiners for making me expect the worst in this case, because it's been pretty refreshing that it isn't nearly as bad as it was made out to be.
I suppose I can understand why people who were expecting something revolutionary might be disappointed with the gameplay, but at this point, I'm not disappointed in the least. Maybe it's because I've always been a fan of the straight action shooter (I still play the original Doom regularly, and Serious Sam is one of my favorite games ever), but I don't see myself getting bored with this for a while. New monsters have been steadily being introduced, keeping combat interesting without being too overwhelming (usually, anyway, except when they decide to throw four imps or three pinky demons at you at once, which is a huge rush (speaking of which, the introduction of the pinky demon was one of the coolest things I've ever seen)).
All-in-all, I'm loving it so far.
I wish I was able to get the game when it came out, though. Everyone else has already played and beaten it, so I don't really have anyone to get excited about it with.
