~~~~~~
A soft breeze is in the air.
Making the yellow and orange collared leaves rustle softly.
Rain is falling down. But unlike most rainy days the sun is shining bright. Making the surroundings look unreal.
Just like that one last time I was here.
I slowly make my way though the forest, hill downwards.
That same forest where I saw him for the last time.
The area here is inhabited, aside from a few small shrines.
I silently continue my walk. Enjoying the rain that’s trickling down my face.
Some of it mingled with salty droplets of tears.
It’s been 4 years since Kai disappeared.
3 years and 11 weeks since that day I found out that I hadn’t been dreaming. And that I actually knew what had happened with Kai.
My feet lead me over an old path, probably only used by the animals around here.
Here and there I can see the remains of a long forgotten railway.
A few last raindrops fall down, the sun starts shining brighter, lighting up the wet world, and I find myself standing in front of an open space in the forest. The rails end here...
I quietly walk to the other side of the rails. I recognize it as the same place I saw Kai for the last time.
Not far away from me is a stone standing, and I’m slightly surprised when I see Kai’s name engraved in it.
It’s then that I know that, that same spot was the last place Kai set foot on before he vanished.
I kneel in front of the stone, bowing deeply before placing a red rose on it.
“I still love you, Kai… I won’t forget you” I mutter, a few tears run down my cheeks.
I close my eyes, listening to the sounds of the forest around me. I can hear a breeze nearing, and surprisingly enough, as it passes the sound of wind chimes is heard softly.
I keep my eyes closed, waiting for another breeze, wanting to hear that same tune again.
Those clear tunes.
It’s there again. It’s like it’s twirling around me with each single breeze.
“Kai” I breath out as his figure appears in front of me.
“W-why...w-where were you??” I have so many questions to ask him. Was he dead? Is he dead? Why was he dead? From what did he die?
“Shhh” He whispers. Moving towards my kneeling form, and without another word he pulls me in a hug.
My arms wrap around him in an instant.
How come I can touch him now?
Will he be back for good?
Or will he fade away again, leaving me behind,
Alone again…
“I’m always with you Uruha, I’ll be always by your side” He whispers, a small kiss is placed on my lips.
A strong breeze passes. Tearing the leaves from the trees, making them swirl around on the wind.
And with the sound of wind chimes ringing in my ears Kai fades again.
Those clear tunes, together with his words echoing in the wind.
Always
A small wind chime on a necklace is all what’s left on the place of the stone. The rose disappeared too… I pick it up, and hang it around my neck. I’ll never take it off again.
Always
And I know when I walk back, that I will continue my life.
Now knowing that Kai was and always will be at my side, no matter what.
I give one last glance to the forest at the foot of the hill before turning around again.
I will wait for the day we will be together once again.
The end.
