I've never been in this sort of situation before. I've been in accidents before. I've had my car damaged before. So I've got pretty great insurance because my car is important to me, and because when I'm broke having to come up with $500 or $250 could be really difficult, so after the dirt-clod incident, my deductible is $100. The last time my car was in the shop, my insurance only paid for $15/day rental. So I upped that to $30. Which doesn't help when my insurance only deals with Enterprise "we'll pick you up" and every Enterprise in the greater bay area has only extra-large vans and trucks. So yesterday still sucked.
Backing up.
Thursday, on my way home from picking up the girls, I stopped and picked up laundry. When I approached the building, I debated whether I should park on the curb to save myself a flight of stairs. I decided against it because I hate having to wipe the windows down when it's been parked on the street. So I parked in my carport, got the laundry out, and went upstairs.
Friday - yesterday - I got up early and was having a pretty good morning. I showered, dressed, came over to Cam's and got smooches and my belt that I had forgotten Thursday. He had an armload of stuff, so we walked down together, with me opening doors for him. And when we opened the door to the carport, my car wasn't there. Just... not there. I blinked, and shrugged and figured I had parked on the street. and I must have verbalized that in some way, because Cameron offered me a ride to my car, and I got in, and he drove up and around to the side of the street I park on when I park on the street. and my car wasn't there. I started to get a sick feeling at that point. This morning, I was really unsure where I had ended up parking, so I asked him to check the other street. And he did, and my car wasn't there either. So we called the police.
...
I don't think I have the energy to do a blow-by-blow of yesterday.
Police came and took a report. Talked to insurance. Went to bank and canceled accounts, because of a decade-old habit of leaving checkbook in car. Didn't pick up a rental truck, can't drive a truck while crying. Left name and number for them to call me when a small car came in. Got breakfast, bought a car-charger for my almost-dead phone. talked to insurance lady, made a statement. went home and picked up the house a little. cried often. was consoled by Cam. went to bookstore to replace Adoor's book which got left in car. Went to blockbuster and dropped off movies, picked up others.
Finally went to pick up a car, and the world was a much better place.
Had dinner with Chelle, came home and watched movie with Cam and Adoor. Totally flaked on Stuarina, who brought her notary stuff home so I could turn in my stupid insurance thing. Got out of bed to send her an SMS at 11:50pm trying to explain.
Things to do today:
Go back to the bank, because I discovered that closing accounts means losing online access to six years of statements. Statements I don't have paper copies of.
Go to the autoshop with the date of my last service, so he can pull the invoice for me, since I left the paperork in the glovebox, and insurance wants proof I have new tires.
Complete, sign, notarize and fax papers to insurance.
Replace locks on my house, since there's a spare key to the house in the car, and my address is easily findable on paperwork in the car.
Finish list of "what was in car", check with insurance about covering personal items.
Thats all I can think of right now, and I need to get moving so I can make it to the bank today.
