Okay it probably won't be THAT bad... but considering my health issues I dealt with I was looking for a bit more of a break :p
So here's the situation I'm being handed at work - I write sports for two newspapers, the Redmond Reporter and Bothell-Kenmore Reporter. This week and next are the two busiest weeks of the year for me as a high school sports writer because it's state championship week for Spring sports (Baseball, track and field, golf, tennis etc) and it just so happens that the local teams are doing really really well and are all heading to the state meets and finals with a good chance to win.
We have exactly TWO people on the staff of the Bothell-Kenmore Reporter for editorial, my editor and myself.
My editor decides to take a two-week vacation (almost unheard of at our company with our small staffs) right in the middle of championship week, so it's just me at the paper.
I have to check his e-mail and sift through news briefs, write up news items, organize photos, answer phone calls and put new stuff up on our website before I even get to the sports... and I still have to do just as much as before sports-wise.
Also, just my luck, for the first time EVER both Redmond and Bothell made the state semifinals for baseball (granted there are probably 100 teams in the state at the 4A level what are the odds that my two high school teams I cover will BOTH make the final four???) and I will have to travel to the state championship stadium (about an hour away) to cover the finals for probably 10 hours on Saturday. Oh yeah, there's also the state track meet that day, that THREE of my schools are attending. But unfortunately they haven't figured out how to clone humans yet so I'll have to stick with baseball.
The only bright side is that I did get 10 hours of overtime approved for each of the next two weeks, which frankly I'm surprised I got given how tight my company is with money. I think they realize that what they're asking me to do is absolutely ridiculous, and that extra money will come in handy with AC right around the corner.
So I will now crawl back into my little hole and start cranking away... wish me luck. Oh, and I hope nothing serious happens in Bothell or Kenmore over the next two weeks.
Like this. Or This. That would seriously suck. I'd have to drop everything and do that story.
