On Fine Arts

Mar 06, 2007 16:46

I just left a very pleasant conversation with one of my fine arts professors. It's good to talk with someone so knowledgeable about areas I know precious little about, and he told me about a couple of operas in Michigan that I may try to get to if it's not too costly. (Apparently the University of Michigan will be putting on a good Czech-language opera the last weekend of spring break with student tickets at only $8.)

I still don't understand these attitudes concerning the superiority of polyphony. Yes, it's beautiful and to be enjoyed, but why transform the divine services into concerts? Concerts are pleasurable social events, not times to gather together to pray to and praise the Lord God. For this the sacred music of the Catholic Church should be employed, the music which (tragically) the Christian West and now even Orthodox Russia largely scorn :-/.

Anyway, a surprisingly good afternoon. Thank God for that.
