Dr. Setsuna Xavier was not having a good day.

Not that life was ever easy when you were a mutant - particularly a psychic mutant. As of late, however, things had been particularly troublesome. In addition to the ever constant struggle against her old colleague, Dr. Tomoe (Magneto, she reminded herself. It was easier if she distanced her brilliant friend from the madmen he had become even in name), there was more in-fighting among the X-Senshi than was usual.

Setsuna paused in the middle of her experiments when her subconscious picked up on unrest within the compound. Lifting a hand to her brow, she concentrated on the location. Once she had pinpointed it, she guided her wheelchair towards the sight of the conflict. She knew before she crossed the first threshold what she would find there.

As if caricatured in a parody of themselves, Haruka Howlett and Michiru - better known as Storm - stood facing off against Rogue and Cyclops. Haruka had even unsheathed her claws, the adamantium glinting in the light. Mamoru, as usual, looked non-plussed behind his ever present red-tinted glasses.

"You can't honestly be considerin' hurtin' the poor child," Usagi Marie said, her soft drawl peppering her words so that they were almost comical. "She don't mean any harm."

"Hotaru Grey is more than a mere girl," Storm countered, her voice intelligent and cool. Ami Drake may have been the mutant who could manipulate ice, but Setsuna always thought Michiru could freeze her opponents with a word. The white eyes didn't hurt. "She is the only known Level 5 mutant in existence. As long as Magneto has her under his sway--"

"We're fucked," Haruka growled.

Michiru arched an eyebrow but refrained from comment. "She is a danger to us all."

"The way I see it," Mamoru Summers mused, frowning behind his glass, "mutants are forever a danger to each other and to mankind itself. Just as humans are a danger to us and themselves."

"This is hardly the same," Michiru said. There was a distant thunder crash Setsuna was not altogether willing to chalk up to coincidence.

Indeed, it seemed the time for intervention had come. "Enough," Setsuna called out, smoothly moving forward in the chair. "These arguments are getting us nowhere."

Rogue shook her hair, the white streaks in her ponytails barely visible in the blur. "I cannot and will not accept that we have to sacrifice a child just because of what she might do."

"Silence will fall if Hotaru Grey every reaches for her full power," Michiru murmured. "I can promise you that."

"And I don't know about you," Haruka snarled, sheathing her claws only out of respect for Xavier, "but I ain't much of a fan of dead quiet."

"And I ain't a fan of murdering children."

Xavier was quite sure Wolverine and Cyclops would have ended up in another infamous brawl, had Gambit and the Beast not run in at precisely that moment.

"Oh my stars and garters," Luna McCoy panted, her black-purple hair standing on end. "This again."

"No time for this business," Artemis "Remy" LeBeau snapped, drawing his trademark cards from his dirty white trench coat.

"What's the matter, sugar?" Rogue asked. "Trouble?"

Gambit grinned. "Always trouble when I'm around, mon cher."

Mamoru cleared his throat loudly. "Beast?"

"Magneto's here," Beast said with a surreptitious glance at Setsuna. The creature - or would it be better to say woman? - really was too intelligent for her own good. "And I am equally sorry to report that he has brought company."

"Well, he can't show up to the party without a pretty date," Haruka chuckled, flexing her muscles. "Kaorinite?"

"Scarlet Woman and another one. Think her name's Eudial," Gambit answered.

"What's her power?" Mamoru asked.

"If I recall correctly," Luna answered, "they called her Pyro."

Rogue frowned. "I never did like fire, sugar."

"I supposed we had better drown her then," Storm said coldly, her eyes beginning to glow.

Rogue shuddered. "Can't say I love that much either."

"Come on, Rogue," Mamoru murmured, taking care not to touch her skin. "We'd better go."

Rogue nodded, looking over her shoulder at Wolverine and Storm. "This isn't over."

Wolverine gave her a feral grin. "Never is."

Finally, the mutants sprang forward - running, leaping, and literally flying into the fray. As always, Setsuna Xavier was left on her own.

"No," she whispered to the empty room. "It never is over."
