Ladies and gentlemen, if you haven't already met her, I'd like to introduce you to Michele Bachmann, a Republican Congresswoman from Minnesota who did two things in the past couple of days: 1) announced she was entering the 2012 presidential race, and 2) officially became the "new Sarah Palin" by making an incredibly uninformed (not to mention hilarious) statement in the press.
In an interview with Fox News, Bachmann spoke of her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, from where she had announced her candidacy. At one point, she said, "Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
The problem? John Wayne the actor is actually from another Iowa town, named Winterset. The John Wayne that did hail from Waterloo? That'd be John Wayne Gacy, a serial killer who in the 1970s murdered over 30 men and buried most of them in the crawl space underneath his house.
Oops.
How can you make a mistake like that-- like THAT-- about your own hometown? That'd be like me talking about my hometown of Wakefield, MA and claiming that instead of it being the place where Michael McDermott shot seven of his co-workers, it was the place where Michael McDonald shot seven of his music videos.
Actually, that does sound a lot better. I'm gonna tell people that from now on.
