During my study abroad program in 2004, our class went to Bruges. It was there that I had the best meal of my life to date. A crowned rack of lamb. It was juicy, delicious and tender. It was so juicy in fact that when I started to cut it, juice burst out of it and hit my professor’s arm. My professor loved Bruges and treated us to Belgian waffles. I was surprised to find I didn’t like them at all. They’re waffles with whole sugar cubes baked in. The sugar was so concentrated I tried to eat around them and pick them out. I didn’t end up finishing my waffle. She also treated us to a little canal cruise.
After our class at the art museum we had free time. We all went to a bar and had drinks. I remember one girl from our group really wanted the glass she was drinking from. I guess she liked the bar’s logo design. When she thought no one was looking, she slipped the glass into her bag. I thought it was interesting that she would choose that as a souvenir. After the bar I decided to go off on my own.
Oddly enough there was some kind of carnival going on down the street from our hotel. I went with some other students to partake in the fun. We rode on this little mini rollercoaster. It was way more fun than it looked like it would be. I played a game. I don’t actually remember what the game was, but in the end I won a small stuffed toy. It was a sunflower with a happy face on it. I thought it was so cute and funny. We all went on this pendulum ride that spin around in a circle as it swung back and forth. I was worried I would get sick, but it was fun and I felt fine afterward. Then everyone wanted to go on the thrill ride. It was a two seater ride that spun the car around while spinning the whole thing around in a really fast long arc. The ride was scary because it was fast and really really high. Since it only sat two people the line was so long it looked like it would take forever to get on anyway. I opted out and went off on my own.
I bought some chocolate covered grapes to enjoy as I walked around the carnival. I only had enough tickets left to go on one more ride so I was trying to find something I thought would be worthwhile. It was the last ride I was going to go on so I wanted it to be memorable. All the way at the end of the carnival area I saw a haunted house ride. I was intrigued and thought it looked kind of interesting, maybe it would be scary. I walked around some more thinking it over trying to be selective about my last ride my last night in Bruges. I finally ended up back at the haunted house and decided to go for it. When I got on the ride I realized it was for children. Like really little kids that would be scared of “Boo” noises. The only thing the ride consisted of was sitting in a car, the car rolling into a dark area behind a curtain and a person in a goblin mask coming up to the car and pretending to reach in to get you. The goblin basically did a little growl and then lightly brushed it’s gloved claw close to your face. It was totally lame and not scary at all. I felt so silly once I left the ride. I was actually embarrassed and decided that I wouldn’t tell anyone I actually went on it.
As I walked back to the hotel I passed the thrill ride. I actually did see two of my classmates spinning around incredibly fast screaming at the top of their lungs. Bruges was a beautiful city and an amazing experience. The carnival was just a random bonus.
