updation

I'm going to try and get this thing up and running again, no promises though.

I actually forgot the last time I updated and am too lazy to go back an look so I'll start in December of 2007.  I graduated in mid-December already having a job in a Central Texas school district as an 8th grade science teacher.  I began after the Christmas break.  That half year was a great challenge but well worth it.  I am currently still at that district getting ready to start my second year in the same position.  The last week i have spent setting up a new classroom and lab, they are refurbing my old building and hopefully will have a full science lab/classroom ready for me to move in over the Christmas break.

This school is relatively small and I wasn't given much support last year, this year they have hired a third science teacher that hopefully will be a great resource for me.  She's going to help me with curriculum and style development while I get her worked into the district.  I lucked out and my neighbor teacher has been here for a while and is a coach, which means he knows everybody so he fit me in nicely.

Last year I commuted about an hour each way to work, this year I have moved to the town of my district.  It's going to be a bit of a change but I still plan on being in Austin as much as I can on the weekends.  I have a nice duplex and the people who live in the other half own one of the restuarants in town.  I needed a few things for my place and sent out a school wide email and had many responses and the people wouldn't let me pay for anything, I think this is going to be a great place to be for a while.  I do not have internet or cable hooked up in my new house yet so I've been hanging out at the local Starbucks an hour or so every night catching up on the outside world.

Future plans as of now include getting the house settled into and getting off to a great year, I'm really looking forward to it.  Beyond that I'm planning on getting started on my master's degree within a year or so.  As of right now I've settled on something in the Educational/Instructional Technology area and tacking on a Mid-Management plan (that's what you need to become a Principal and many other positions above the classroom teacher level).  I think I want to stay in the classroom for at least five years though, maybe for the rest of my career.  During my masters program I will continue to teach full time, I've found a few programs that I can do either fully online or only go in during the summers/weeknds or a night a week.

That feels like it for right now.  I'm not usually one to throw parties, but this feels like the first 'real' place I've lived outside of my parents that I MIGHT get something together, although it is a bit of a drive from the big city.

Now, for those of you who made it rhtough that I have an interesting story from today to reward you with.  The afformentioned teacher/coach had an interesting conversation with a new student's mother today.  They have just moved into the area for a very large Texas city.  When Coach asked her why they moved she said it was because his old school was 'gay'.  We both found that interesting.  Glad he's going to have that kid and not myself.

Much love to all,
kieser
