I finally recieved my student teaching position for the coming term. I will be in a 5th grade science lab, so no lecture for me. It's going to be a good experience, but at the same time I'm a bit worried about not getting the full on classroom experience because it is only a lab. Then again I know I can stand in front of a classroom and talk to them all day long, the labratory stuff is more interesting and harder to get right.
My first day in the classroom will be on the tenth, so I'm going to enjoy having the next days off and a bit of an extended vacation. I've had a few orientations and seminars so far, but no more meetings between now and the start of my classroom time. One neat thing is that when my cooperating teacher is out of the class I get paid as the substitute teacher, and since our student teaching time ends about two weeks before the end of public schools I can take that time and substitute some more and make some extra cash to last over the break until my new job starts.
Speaking of that new job, I don't have it yet, but hopefully I will by the end of December. I am in one of the best positions to pick up a job mid-year. My certification is for all academics between grades 4-8, I'm older than the typical first year teacher, I'm a guy and I live within commuting distance of many school districts. It might not be the dream job right off the bat, but if it's not I'll only have to do it for a semester then can use the summer to find the job at the location I really want.
In other news, I'm continuing to work at Mochas & Javas while I student teach. I'll be working every other weekend and 2-3 nights during the week. We are opening a new location inside the hospital here in San Marcos and, while I won't be able to work there in general, I will be helping them get up and running before I start my teaching. My new apartment is coming together slowly but surely, at the moment though it is currently covered in drying clothes because the power went out at the laundrymat earlier today. I got a motorcycle and have been racking up the miles, I hope it turns into my daily commuter although I need to buy some more gear for that to happen.
