On a whim, I decided to start watching Star Trek: The Next Generation on Netflix. They have the entire series nicely indexed, so I started at the beginning, not having seen much of the first season.
OH MY GOD, was it ever CAMPY! I know, the first few episodes were there to introduce the new crew and establish the team dynamics, but holy cow, it's a wonder they managed to make it out of the first season. The writing was sloppy, the sets were low-budget, the Ferengi were embarrassing, and the plots tried way too hard to be just like The Original Series. So far, I've only suffered through the first four episodes, but it's almost painful to watch.
It's a good thing the series really improved around the third season, which is where I recall them really hitting their stride. I remember when my parents and I watched TNG on TV when it was new, I thought that the show became a lot more interesting in that season. It's about the time that the writers finally broke the mold of the old series and started exploring what they really could do with the updated universe. I'm looking forward to that, if for no other reason than "OH GOD, MAKE IT STOP!" ;)
Not to say it was all excellent stuff after that point. But they had many more hits than misses at about that time.
