Writer's Block: Little White Lies

Jul 09, 2009 16:37

I honestly don't believe there's such a thing as a harmless lie. It's a religious as well as a practical thing to me. I think that in lying to avoid hurting someone's feelings can lead to worse problems in the future. Suppose you're friend is a writer. She asks you what you think of a piece of her writing. You think it's terrible but lie instead and tell her it's wonderful. Content in your appraisal she sends it to a publisher and is quickly rejected. In tears she comes to you asking why you thought it was well written. What should you have done? In my not so humble opinion you should have given her some constructive criticism. I know it might sting her but it's best in the long run.
I know that example seems a little far fetched but you never know what might happen as a result of a "white lie".
