Somehow I still have faith that my data is tucked away in there, but inaccessible because of hardware issues. I would like to believe that because it still turns on and the computer recognizes in some fashion

Yea, I don't even know if I'll have vacation during winter because I'm just starting my job. I think you can reschedule a paper or quiz if you let your prof know ahead of time.
