Anywhere within a 20' radius of me seemed like the best place to hold a cell phone conversation today. Don't get me started on the people playing music out loud on their laptops.
I think you're right about the generational thing. It seems to me that libraries are becoming more like big cafes (the Urbana Free Library actually has a cafe in one of its sections), and I don't have a problem with the associated noise if libs are going to be used in this way.
I can understand adjustments when dealing with new media too. It's just the thing with kids running around the non-youth sections yelling, unchecked by their parents, or people just having loud cell phone conversations, or playing songs/whatever on your computer with no regard to fellow patrons. That stuff is just plain rude and really should be no part of any public space where the main purpose is reading.
