rain and the community garden

We went armed with our shovel and fork last night to do more hard labor in the community garden plot. When we arrived they had a big tiller out there and they tilled the remaining half of our plot for us! We didn't buy any more compost or bring our seedlings out because we thought we'd only have time for tilling ( Read more... )

I'm glad I'm not the LAST one out there to get my garden in! I just got mine done last night. We have been having rain almost every day (but not all day) which is really weird here in CO. At least it sounds like you are putting in plants. I was mostly planting seeds, so we have a long way to go before we see anything. We often just end up throwing a bunch of seeds in the garden really late and hoping we get SOMETHING. This year, I planted some fenugreek seeds that we got last year and never used. That should be interesting if they aren't too late.

Luckily we started a bunch of stuff from seed. But we were getting anxious because the seedling really wanted to be in the ground, we really could have planted them a few weeks ago!

Have you tried greens? Super easy from direct sowing. If you like kale, there are varieties that perform like a champ all season long.

We are going to be up to our ears in greens! We planted 5 kinds of lettuce & spring mix! And we get arugala volunteers all over our garden. Also, I planted broccoli, basil, sage, chives, some tomato plants, some herb plants, and some flowers (johnny jump ups, snap dragons, zinnias, butterfly flowers). We haven't done kale before, but the lettuces and spring mixes do well here. And as I said, the rocket is not essentially a weed in our garden now - but a yummy one! :)
