Gah, I can't believe I've waited so long to post! I've taken a new interest (besides vintage dresses *drool* <3) in astronomy. I actually took a class in high school, but of course, I was not smart/cool enough then to realize how awesome the subject is :P Actually I spent a lot of time sleeping and debating about pointless crap with this extremely devout Christian kid. Although I did like the teacher, he was kind of funny when he wasn't being a painful bore <.< He used to tape kids to their chairs when they fell asleep and stuff haha (thankfully, I have always been a light sleeper). I think my ex military boyfriend left a telescope in my garage so my mission tomorrow is to fight my way through the spiderwebs and try to find it xD. Anyway, if you feel like being a huge geek READ ON :D! More pictures are behind the cut.
Facts I found most interesting:
☆ In 5 billion years, a day will be 48 hours long. Unfortunately, that is when scientists expect the Sun to explode.
☆ Even on the clearest night, the human eye can only see about 3,000 stars. There are an estimated 100,000,000,000 in our galaxy alone.
☆ Earth is said to have an atmosphere that proportionally is thinner than the skin of an apple.
☆ If Saturn were placed in a huge bathtub, it would float.
☆ A light-year is actually a measure of distance, not time.
☆ Aside from the Sun, Sirius is the star with the brightest apparent magnitude, as seen from Earth.
☆ If a piece of the sun the size of a pinhead were to be placed on Earth, you could not safely stand within 90 miles of it.
Here's a diagram of the milky way :3
Ancient Chinese map of the stars. They used to think stars predicted the future.
The Andromeda Galaxy (which is 2.3 million light years away). The light from this galaxy takes 2.3 million years to reach you. Which means you are seeing the galaxy as it was 2.3 million years ago.
Devastation a star leaves behind when it explodes.
The Aurora Borealis. Auroras are produced by the collision of charged particles that come from the Sun.
