i found winter

Dec 03, 2007 23:35

when i woke up my first morning in new york and the ground was covered in white. fists in the air and pumping my hips i ran out as quick as i could get my clothes on. everywhere is so new york. crisp air four story buildings rusty fire escapes scarves people walking subway tunnels. the metro here isn't better than sf's metro. sf doesn't even have a metro, it's got a couple of trains left over from a project that was never finished driven by people who were never told the system was shut down. and people people! i floated along a long tunnel filled with people, born in a flow like peanuts on a factory conveyor belt. peanuts flowing in both directions, and then split and divided into dozens of different tunnels, to different trains, which will spread peanuts all over the city.

but fierce the cold! i stomped through china town with stiff fingers and frozen breath until i found a full set of thermals for $8 and changed into them excitedly doing a delicate dance in the cramped and dingy bathroom of "tea salon & dim sum" i drank a whole pot of oolong, had four delicious shrimp dumplings, and (feeling obligated to buy more for the free tea) ordered pork buns because i didn't know how to ask the waiter for any thing else. anyways, long term habits are more important than short term absolutes.

there are so many friendlies here! meeting people is as easy as throwing babies into a pile. thanks to tali for inviting me, michael for letting me stay at his place, topel for the dance-class-pants, michelle for teaching dance class, cornelious honey, jim for being jim, charlie for hospitality, and everyone else fun fun fun.
