i should have wrote this a while ago.
it's common in puerto vallarta to make the equivalent of $300 u.s each month (at a 50-60 hour work week), though prices in the city are similar to u.s. prices due to the tourism. i'm a big fatty tourist and love touring, but i'm mystified by those who have 3 hours off the cruise ship to see mexico and they walk across the street and spend half that time in the wal-mart. i was in that very wal-mart one day to take a dump (a favorite past-time), and noticed while waiting outside the bathroom two small signs, one in english, one in spanish. "the baggers at wal-mart do not receive any compensation for their work other than the gratuity of our customers." their baggers work for tips. FUCKING TIPS? a store filled with rich vacationing americans and nothing more to tell them they should tip the baggers except a tiny sign tucked away by the bathroom.
wal-mart profited
3.6 billion 4th quarter '06 and has
1.5 million employees world wide. that's what, just under 10k annually, per employee? thank you wal-mart for affirming my faith in international capitalism.
