(ok, so I realize this community is pretty much dead, but according to the userinfo some 70+ people have it on their watch list, so here goes...)
First off, the idea behind this craft is extremely versatile, so evenif you don't do St Pat's day, follow along and use your own imagination for whatever else you can do with the same idea.
After a few days of bugging me for a St. Patricks Day craft, I finally pulled out a bunch of stuff we had laying around and let my 6-year-old daughter at it (with a bit of help from her brothers. and from me). I started with, well, anything green I could find, then some gold I happened to have, and kind of went from there. I had green foam paper which I used for the base of it, but you could use cardboard or something too. Cut out 9 heart shapes--3 large, 3 medium, and 3 small. each was decorated in green and gold fabric, foil paper, trim, glitter, etc. then we glued them stacked small, medium, large, to make a 3-layered leaf. used popsicle sticks in the back to hold them together, and ended up with this:
...after which my daughter was on a roll. she wanted MORE st. patricks day crafts. so I thought a bit and decided a rainbow in the same idea would be nice. gathered up fabric scraps, yarn, ribbon, etc. (and some scrapbook paper for the orange, since we didn't have much for that) and cut out a big cardboard arch, drew lines separating the spaces for the different colors, and made this a bit more mosaic-like:
