A rationale I heard is that when Obama stepped into presidency, he found himself with a country with a growing political divide that was becoming larger and larger. During Bush's presidency, the Democrats felt that Bush was abusing his power to greatly tip the scales in favor of the Republicans. With the upcoming 2008 election, Obama may have been concerned with the rift between the Republicans and the Democrats (reminiscent of the rift that existed pre-civil war) and so, tried to appease both sides (therefore pissing off everyone) because he's been thinking of the U.S. in long-terms. If he did everything that Democrats had hoped he would do, the Republicans, who were already getting momentum, demanding that they wanted "our country back" would actually start something and possibly disunite the States.
And from what I was seeing, I agree with this argument that that was what Obama was and is doing.
