Sadly many unhealthy relationships go this way and should have ended before they began. If this was a true story I'm sorry this happened to you. If it was not it was a very compelling piece. Nice to see you again!

But in the beginning there is a mostly good with a pinch of bad and then it gradually shifts to mostly bad with a pinch of good.

So before it begins you don't know whether it stays at a lot of good with a little bad, which seems a realistic expectation.

I swear, it sounded so much like my ex husband. If this entry is true, I am so glad you were brave enough to end it. I kept hoping (fruitlessly, I now know) for 17 years and three children.

This line especially struck me: "- I was supposed to be the moon, reflecting back to him the light of his sun, caught in his trajectory with no agency of my own."

Wow, that is so the way my ex was. And honestly, that's the way he still treats our kids (who live with me.). Our oldest is now 20 and from his words, he realizes how one-sided his dad is. I guess its good he can see it, but its also heart-breaking.

This line describes.my ex so well too: "He held out love and approval as the carrot before the stick, and whenever I got too close, he would push me back."

Wow, that line just..wow. That is very much the way some.people operate but I never quite knew how to describe it. You captured this so perfectly!!
