The Last Yankee
By: Arthur Miller

Directed by: Megan Watters

Frick……………. John Carucci
Leroy…………… David Barfield

This one-act tells the story of two men whose wives are in a mental institution. As they meet in the hospital waiting room, they drift from small-talk to the discussion of their deeply personal lives. Through tone and gesture, an underlying hint of disrespect and condescension comes to surface as both men illustrate varying views of the ‘American dream.’

“Throughout his life and work, Miller has remained socially engaged and has written with conscience, clarity, and compassion.”
-Rachel Galvin
(Princeton University)

Because Miller continually observed and assessed society and politics, he was able to capture not only people’s actions, but their motivation as well. He understood the concept of people striving to reach an unattainable ideal, and never finding happiness with what they have already found.

I did not originally plan to direct a realistic piece for my IB senior one-act. However, once I read this one-act I knew that I had to share it with others. Too often people associate a perfect life with accumulation of riches and power. I wanted to prove that money cannot buy happiness. I also wanted to show the socio-economic discrimination that is still prevalent in the lives of many Americans today. It is my hope that this one-act has a positive effect on all who watch it. Enjoy!
