Someone asked me today why my nickname is "Captain Lauren" (I get about 2 e-mails a month under the subject heading: "Oh Captain, My Captain!" And you know how much I appreciate literary references.) so I came up with a pretty exact explanation if I do say so myself. So here for your reading enjoyment is why I am "Captain Lauren and the KickBack Kid":
I call myself "Captain Lauren" for 3 different reasons:
1) Both of my parents were majors in the Marine Corps: their anal bullshit has entitled me to at least the Honorary rank of Captain.
2) When I was in high school I was a high ranking cadet in the Navy JROTC program: not a Captain, but I always like the ring of "Captain Lauren" better than "Lieutenant Junior Grade Herstead"
3) Once I reached college, and a little before than it was clear that 2 distinct sides of my personality had developed: a) the in control, intelligent, wel thought out, strategically planning Lauren, and b) the wild and crazy, unpredictable, performance artist Lauren. I named these 2 sides respectively: "Captain Lauren and the Kickback Kid." It's always a guess as to which one is making an appearance one day or the next.
So that's why I'm Captain Lauren. It also conveniently rhymes with "Captain Morgan" a tasty alcoholic beverage that bears the insignia of a pirate: of which, of course, I am: pillaging and plundering the minds of impressionable youth.
