I've pet-sat for my boss's dogs a few summers; the first time I got $10 per day (two great Pyrenees, one little doggie, one old cat, and one crazy old cat that never moved). None of the dogs needed walking and I didn't have to scoop their poo, either. I only had to feed them occasionally because there was always someone else at the house to feed them. I did have to stay overnight and sleep in the master bedroom with the doggies. As for the cats, I had to clean both litterboxes and make sure they had enough food.

The following year I had to do pretty much the same stuff, but I decided to charge them $10/hr. of actively taking care of the dogs and cat (the crazy one had passed on at this point). So while I didn't count spending nights, I did count feeding, refilling/cleaning doggie bowls, cleaning the kitchen floor that occasionally was covered with their slobber, trips to the vet (as the little doggie was on his last legs), etc. I would say that for the 2-2.5 weeks I took care of them, I may have earned $150 maybe $200 for my time spent taking care of them.

I almost took care of a friend of my boss's dog, but scheduling didn't work out. She was planning on paying me $35/day to come by in the AM, take the dog for a short walk, make sure it had enough food, and then come back later in the day to let the dog out to pee.

So really, it does depend on how much work you'll be doing and how many pets there are. You could make an offer that is more than you expect to be compensated for and they can adjust the rate from there. That way you could possibly get the amount you wanted. Or else I'm schemy and weird... :-P :)
