So here we are again to experience the bitter scalding end, and we're the only ones who can perceive it.
It's not mine, though I wish I could claim it; its Greg Graffin's of Bad Religion. But original or not I think the line is indicative of the situation so many of us find ourselves in; politically speaking that is. I wonder if people are cognizant of the sheer magnitude of this dire and devastating financial tsunami that we, our nation and our world will soon be facing down. Hell we're facing it down already, but so few of us know what we're looking at and lamentably that includes John McCain. "The fundamentals of our economy are strong." he said and despite some last minute backpedaling he really hasn't changed his overall stance and why would he? Anyone with seven homes should be able to weather this hurricane.
Galveston is in ruins, Houston faces major damage (has New Orleans been fixed yet?), and thousands of people are homeless. Al Qaeda attacked our embassy in Yemen and Afghanistan continues to descend into chaos. I must ask, if the surge in Iraq worked so well when do we discuss leaving? Of course if we do, Sarah Palin may send us to war against Russia.
We stand at a precipice overlooking disaster at best. At worst we have already taken the plunge. There can be no doubt that we've entered the dark clouds of a recession; the worst financial disaster since 1930. Lehman Brothers tanked on Monday, Merrill got swallowed by BofA, AIG was bailed out today, not to mention Fanny and Freddie and let’s not forget Bear Sterns last spring. On Monday the market plunged 500 points, another 450 today thus triggering a significant slide in the Asian markets. Japan dropped 3.79%, Taiwan 5.3%, Shanghai 5.8% and Hong Kong a whopping 7.22% we hear that Morgan Stanley is talking about a merge with Wachovia, WaMu is also considering mergers and the last giant, GoldmanSachs saw a significant drop in its value. In addition to the newly high 6.7% unemployment rate we hear that Hewlett Packard will be cutting about 25,000 jobs. What will happen tomorrow? Perhaps the magic Sarah Palin will don skates and take to the ice for the Red Wings. Not that anyone living in Detroit could afford to buy tickets to see it.
What, Mr. McCain is strong about that? Oh, I forgot, the fundamentals of the economy are the work ethic and the entrepreneurial spirit of the American people. Well what good is that when there is no work to apply an ethic or innovation to? We suffer and stoically await more suffering and you tell us how admirable we look while we do so. How dare you. A deregulated Wall Street run amok (made so by you and your party) spins wildly out of control in the midst of appalling inflation, unemployment, deficit and debt and your solution is to appoint a commission? A commission?! How far removed from ordinary Americans are you?
What vision you may have once had has been muddied and blurred by the very city you and your prop Palin purport to despise. You are Washington politics at its worst; inflated rhetoric, half-truths and lies form the foundation of your message. I can only hope that America recognizes this lest you doom us as your policies have doomed Wall Street. You are no Maverick or any other meaningless moniker, you are no reformer. You are yet another reflection of the crooked platform of the Republican Party. You are an extension of the disastrous eight years under Bush and the failed economic policies of Reagan. Under you Mr. McCain the only thing trickling down will be the acid rain from a polluted environment. There can be no doubt that a John McCain Presidency will lead us to ruin; a true bridge to nowhere.
