Character info
Series/Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character's Name: Sokka
Character's Sex: Male
Character's Age: 16
Canon point: Post A:tLA
Abilities:
Water Tribe Warrior Style (a mish-mash of martial arts); swordsmanship (Jian-style fencing); basic Tessenjutsu; strategic planning; metalworking; proficiency in melee weapons including: daggers, short swords, tessen (war fans), machetes, spears and clubs; proficiency in long-range weapons including: boomerangs, tessen (war fans);

Strengths:
Sokka is a typical human living in a world full of people with greater abilities. Despite his inability to bend (a fairly common trait among his peers that allows for the control of the elements,) he has proven himself a capable warrior with many abilities. Not only is he intelligent and wise, but he's an exceptionally quick learner and has a voracious appetite for knowledge. He is humorous and bold and when given the opportunity, will do anything and everything for those he cares for the most.

Weaknesses:
When considering weaknesses, much of Sokka's handicap comes from being normal. He's typical where others are extraordinary. Sokka struggles with this, as well as many other weaknesses. Often he does not see a clear outcome when making plans and he is very quick to lose his temper when plans do not go accordingly. On the battlefield, he can be cold and calculating and he doesn't always consider alternative methods to violence as a possibility.
Background: Sokka’s Wiki Page | A:tLA Wiki Page
Appearance: This guy!

Personality:
Generally speaking, Sokka is a positive driving force for those around him, though it wasn’t too long ago that he presented himself as a sarcastic pessimist. Centered mostly in reality thanks to a past full of skepticism and close-mindedness, he keeps his mind focused very securely on the facts and has a proclivity to plan well ahead of time. Extremely resourceful, intelligent and inventive, Sokka is called “The Idea Guy” and is known to take charge and step into a leadership role when no one else is willing. Despite his positive, leader-like traits, this young warrior does not achieve every goal the first time around; however, he is tenacious and willful and will do anything to reach a satisfactory end. He gains wisdom swiftly, and is usually quick to apologize and admit when he’s wrong.

Perhaps the most notable personality trait is Sokka’s sense of humor. Sometimes a tool, often a weapon, and most definitely a stress reliever and defense, humor is used in almost every aspect of his life. He appreciates and makes really lame jokes, wields sarcasm like a dull knife, and is quick to observe humor in himself and his surroundings, especially to lighten an already dour mood. However, he does tend to go a little over-the-top at times, his sense of humor causing him to act or react in a silly manner the is likely not entirely appropriate got the situation.

Even with the immense growth Sokka’s character has experienced (especially during his travels with the Avatar), the young man still struggles with his self-image, constantly worried he’ll fail to live up to the image he has of his father and the expectations he has of himself. This most often comes through when he’s feeling stressed or especially disconnected with those closest him.

He very much believes in family, though the distinction between blood relatives and fellow tribe members, especially amidst the Southern Water Tribe, is minute -- to Sokka, they’re all family, and therefore, they all deserve his loyalty.

Raised in a very small war-ravaged village at the Paopu South Pole, Sokka was forced to grow up young. Being trusted with the safety of his home and fellow tribe members at a very young age was a difficult task, but one the then-small boy took on without question. Due to this, he is fiercely protective of his people, his home, and all that they hold dear. More so, he is highly distrusting of strangers, especially those who very clearly appear to be trouble. Nothing is more evident of this than his extreme and persistent distaste for most of the Fire Nation, who were not only responsible for a multitude of attacks on the Southern Water Tribe, but also the death of his mother and the force behind keeping his father away.

With a good mixture of strength, persistence, and experience behind him, Sokka’s motivations turn towards bettering himself. He is already a skilled warrior, but finds knowledge from many different sources to be useful, and therefore is always looking to improve his skills with a weapon or as a leader or as a man.

Strengths:
Sokka is a strong leader with a passionate need for Icecream and to better himself and the lives of those around him. He is loyal to a fault and will protect his friends and loved ones to the very last. Far from cowardly, Sokka proves his will and determination consistently. Being a swift learner, he is able to correct his mistakes quickly and adapts to make his next decision better based on his previous knowledge and experience.

Sokka is a pretty good judge of character. While he tends to take everyone at face value, when he gets to know a person and finds that he likes them, he becomes very devoted. He enjoys sharing his passions with those around him, and while he can be annoying at times, he has a lot of charm and wit to make up for it.

Weaknesses:
Often quick to act in a tense situation, Sokka has proven to be proactive more than reactive, which can land him in sticky situations. Sarcastic and cynical, the young man will often find himself at the wrong end of a sour look. He is set in his ways, and while he’s very quick to adapt in most situations, he tends to hold on to the rituals and customs from his homeland that mean the most to him.

For having such hefty ambitions (well beyond his reach in many cases,) Sokka tends to fall short in most of the areas where he encounters uncertainty. Without a clear grasp on the goals in front of him, he will often fumble. It rarely stops him, but such failures have been known to set him down a path of self-deprecation and depression.

[What's this? Sokka’s found himself somewhere completely unfamiliar.]

--can't tell me I'm somewhere different from where I went to bed! That's-- that's crazy!

[Sokka digs through what belongings he has with him, turning out pockets and finding little more than an uneaten lychee nut and pocket lint. He huffs and looks around.]

There's gotta be something here -- something! A map, a note, something!

[He stands again, looking around the unfamiliar area at a loss. When he'd last closed his eyes for the night, he'd been safe and home and near by his family. Now? Well, now he's got no idea!]

C'mon, who kidnaps a guy like me? [Frustrated, he turns on his heel and starts seeking out something familiar.] Katara? Aaaaaang, Zuko, Toph? C’mon, guys, this isn’t funny!

"Sokka, did you pack the--"

"Yes," he interrupted, as patiently as he could muster. Everything was packed, he was dressed, it was time to go.

"Well, what about the--"

"Yep."

"And the--"

"Uh huh." Sokka examined himself in the smooth, mirror-like ice, picking indelicately at something in between his teeth. A huffing noise behind him barely registered. Talking around his finger, he continued, "Kafara, I'f goff thish, shokay?"

It was at this point, of course, that the young warrior realized the speck wasn't in his teeth, but instead on the mirror's surface. Eyebrows knit together and tongue protruding in concentration, he leaned in an scraped away at the imperfection with his thumbnail. Satisfied, Sokka turned back toward his sister, Katara, just in time to face her before she unexpectedly tackled him into a great big hug. "I can't believe you're leaving already!"

He tried not to roll his eyes. "Geez, c'mon, it's been, like two years since we defeated Firelord Ozai. How much longer do you want me to--"

Katara pulled back from her brother, fixing him with a stern look that stopped him all together. "No, I meant you could have told me you were leaving a little earlier than yesterday, you jerk!" Tears threatened. She laughed, sniffled, wiped a soft glove at tears that had yet to fall.

"Yeah, well, I let you know as soon as I knew. What can I say? I'm a spontaneous guy," he confessed with a helpless shrug. Sokka retrieved his pack, slinging it over his shoulder and following his sister out into the open. He had a boat to catch, and if the prevailing quiet was any sign, Sokka has a hunch that just about everyone in the Southern Water Tribe was already waiting there to send him off.

"And you've got everything you need? You’re sure?"

Sokka laughed and ticked off fingers as he recalled his inventory. "I've got clothes, weapons, maps, money, water, food. I've even got that Five-Flavor Soup powder you made by waterbending all the water away!" He leaned over and gave Katara a playful nudge with his elbow. "There's nothing to be worried about."

Katara elbowed back. "I'm not worried." There was a pause. "Much."

Oh, here we go. The young man had known this was coming. With their mother gone and their father attending to his duties as the tribal chieftain, it fell on Katara to be sister, friend, confidant, and sometimes, mother. The gathered crowd parted and Sokka tossed a few half-attentive waves towards the others while he continued on with Katara. "I think it's about time I made my own mark, you know? A guy can only get so famous hunting arctic hippos and polar sea lions! If I didn't know you guys were here to keep this place in order, I wouldn't be going. But, since you are..."

"I know, I know." Feeling their time was growing ever shorter, Katara stopped near the docks and clasped her hands in front of her. "I guess I just thought there would be more time to say goodbye." She turned to view their neighbors and friends, all gathered and waiting expectantly.

Sokka smiled at his sister and then followed her gaze back to the crowd. "Who said anything about saying goodbye?" He raised his arm and waved. It was a true testament to the proximity their lives possessed; one person leaving was an event. "See you later, everybody!"

Almost as if prompted to do so, the crowd waved back and replied as one. "Later, Sokka!"

Satisfied with himself, Sokka held his head high and made his way down the length of the dock. He was strong, he kept telling himself. He was a man and he was going to leave like a man. Like a warrior. Each board passed was one step closer to a better, more defined Sokka. It was his destiny and he was taking charge of it and not looking back any time soon.

"...Dammit." Or not.

Stopping in his tracks, Sokka dropped his bag, and went back for as many hugs as he could collect. He was a man, sure, but he was a man that liked hugs and didn't care what anybody thought of it. Even if he intended to return, the young warrior knew there was no guarantee he would make it back, or that the people he knew would still be there. If traveling with the Avatar had taught Sokka anything, it was that he shouldn't take anything for granted.

Katara was waiting for him when he was finished, perched at the end of the dock. "I knew you'd have to go eventually," she revealed, idly waterbending spheres of water to keep herself focused on something other than the tears. "And I really wanted you to know how proud we all are, Gran Gran, Dad, and I."

He pulled her into another hug, this time tighter than the last. "Thanks, sis. Take care of everyone, all right?"

"I always do." She smiled, her tears finally falling. What worry she had before seemed gone now and she waved goodbye to her brother as he boarded the ship.

"I'll see you soon!"

"Sooner than you think," Katara mused as the ship's crew began removing the mooring lines and pulling in the gangplank. Above, Sokka was standing at the bulwark, waving to the cheering people on shore like it was his business. Katara cupped her hands together, calling over the noise just as the ship began to move. "I think you forgot something!"

Sokka barely made out his sister's words and waved off her worry. He yelled back, "I thought we settled this alread--"

"No, Sokka, you forgot something," Katara urged, nudging at her brother's abandoned pack still sitting on the dock. She couldn't help but giggle a little. So much for his grand exit. She knew he wouldn't like it, but that didn't stop her from using the force of the water to send Sokka's pack a'packin'.

The bulk of the bag and all the the water accompanying nearly knocked Sokka from his feet. Soaked and surprised, he gaped like a fish and stood still there for a long moment before falling over onto the deck. He could hear the amusement of the crowd brought on by their antics and slapped a wet hand to his face. "Thanks, Katara."

While it wasn't exactly the goodbye he was hoping for, the young warrior had a feeling it would be just the kind departure they would remember him best for.
