finally, i got a job, he thought to himself. now i can stay in my apartment without a roomate. part time was definitely not cutting it anymore. i hope the pay is worth it. Kibum pulled out of the United Healthcare building with a smile on his face and contentment in his heart. Little did he know that this job was going to offer him much more than what he'd hoped for.

“Ugh…. 5 more minutes,” he said as he hit the snooze for the 4th time. “Wait…. What time is it?!” He looked at his phone with wide eyes. 7:00am. “Shit!” he threw the blanket from his body and rushed to the bathroom to get ready. good job, kibum, he thought. now you only have an hour to get ready…. idiot. He breathed a sigh as he pulled back his shower curtain and stepped into the warm water.
Wrapped in a highlighter pink towel, he shook his head violently as the hair dryer wailed above his music. After his hair was dried and laid down perfectly, he checked the time on his phone. 7:36am. He quickly put his daily BB cream on and put his earrings in as he was walking to his closet. thank you, past me, for getting the clothes ready last night, he thought as he slid into his outfit for the day.
Dressed in his black, slim fit button down with a mid-grey tie under his black and grey argyle sweater, black fitted slacks cuffed perfectly above his black and grey saddle shoes, he went to the kitchen, poured himself a tumbler of coffee, grabbed a poptart, and headed to the door. running down the stairs with his black messenger bag slung over his left shoulder, tumbler in one hand, keys in the other, and poptart in his mouth, he rushed out the main door, down the front stairs to his red Toyota Corolla. Tossing his bag in the passenger seat, he set the tumbler in the center cup holder, started the car, and pulled off.
“Yeah, yeah, Valentine. I know I don’t have my seatbelt on yet. Just gimme a sec,” he said to his car as the seatbelt warning sounded. He put his phone in the holder on the dash, and buckled himself in like he was supposed to. 8:10am. good. i’m not going to be late, he thought as he lightly punched the radio button and fences by paramore began to play.
“Good morning,” he said to the security guard. He waited for the older man to look up, and flashed a smile at him when they made eye contact. “Mornin’. How can I help ya?” “my name’s Kibum Kim, and I’m in the member services training class. We haven’t been given badges yet, so I need let in.” Kibum dug in his bag and grabbed his wallet to show his ID when the manager that interviewed him walked into the lobby. “Hi, Kibum!” “Good morning, Dawn. How’s it going?” “Ah…. I’m here,” she chuckled as she shrugged her shoulders. “Reuben’s not giving you any trouble, is he?” “Not at all. I actually just got here.” “Well, go on in. Class is about to start, right?” “yYeah. 8:30.” “Alright. Learn well. If you end up on my team, I want to brag that you’re the best.” He laughed and walked through the door, down the hallway and into the training room. Taking a seat in the back row, middle computer, he set his bag and tumbler down and opened his cinnamon roll poptart. thank you, again , past me. this was a good idea.
The squeal that pierced the air as he was about to swallow his first bite nearly made him choke. “Bummie, you’re here…. Wait, did you choke? I’m sorry!” “I’m fine, Dana. I could do without the near death experience, though,” he laughed. “Now love me.” He held out his arms for a hug, and Dana squeezed tightly. “Girl....” he gasped for air and tapped her back, “girl…. I gotta breathe.” “Sorry! It’s just been so long! How have you been since college?” “Well, needless to say that graphic design didn’t exactly pan out for me in this city, which is why I’m here. Can’t afford to move to new York or anywhere else. You need at least 5 years experience to get a job here. Other than that, I’m doing ok. I have my little apartment about 8 minutes up the road here. How about you? I see that marketing didn’t treat you any better.” “Damn right, it didn’t,” she grimaced. “Same situation as you pretty much. Pittsburgh sucks for our fields. Damn degree isn’t making anything easier either.” “I know, right?”
“GOOD MORNING! Sorry to yell, but it was loud,” a voice spoke from the front of the room. “My name is Shelley, and I’ll be your trainer. We’re a little late getting started, but we’ll be alright. Also, just so you know, you don’t have to wear business casual anymore. You can just wear your street clothes.” sweet. He cheered. Time passed by faster than he’d expected, and he was happily singing as he bounced up the stairs to his apartment.
The days went by as training moved along, and Kibum couldn't have been happier as the last 2 weeks approached. "Okay, guys. Before we get started today, there are some people I'd like you to meet. Since there are so many of you, and only one of me, I got some help from other reps that have been here for a long time and know the job well. Wanna start?" Shelley looked at the lady to her immediate right. "Sure! Hi, everyone! My name's Amy, and I've been here at UHC for about 4 years now. I know it seems scary at first. I actually cried my first day on the floor, but I swear it's not as bad as you're thinking," she said with a huge smile. "Hi. I'm Vanessa, and I've been here for as long as Amy. I didn't cry." The class chuckled a bit at that last statement. Kibum was too busy looking for his notes, and didn't even look up until he heard the last voice. "Hey, everyone. I'm Jinki. I'm not that great at names, but I promise I'll get them down eventually. We're definitely here to help you, so don't hesitate to ask questions, alright?"
oh, fuck.... i'm in trouble. Kibum thought to himself as he finally looked up and saw who the sweet baritone voice belonged to. jesus, take the wheel.
