Job Questions

Mar 02, 2006 08:02

Okay, this poll comes up because of an interviewer last month mentioning I've had a lot of jobs in the past 6 years, and Rick saying I've had too many jobs. I'll share my answers later. Have your friends come take this and their friends...I'll make it a public post, i just want to get as many responses as possible to get a good idea.

you know,
I put 7-10 but it could very easily be 11-15 because of internships and that type.
wasn't sure if I should count those or not.

and, I've had many many jobs, including jobs that I've left and have gone back to,
lowe's, hawker at the pan american center, florist, best buy, two locally owned places, two places on campus, freelance illustrator work, and about 4 internships/projects that count as professional work experience on my resume.

dang!
my family always jokes I take after my dad
(who jumps around from career to career - which is a bit different than part-time job to part-time job)

but if I'm not happy in one place, or if I can get another job and broaden my work experience, why stay in one place?

of course,
I didn't even start working until after HS,
I've had all of those jobs since age 18.
that's only 5 years. YIKES I'm a job-hopper.

anyway, why is this comment so long?
annnd, where have you been?
I miss your updates!

I only know that stuff because I've been looking and applying for new jobs. I think it's good to be at a place for at least a year or so. But if you have a few short term jobs, I don't think it's a big deal. You're not going to be a match with every company, and sometimes, the companies/positions just don't match for you.

If you're not happy you should just keep sending out your resume. There's no reason to stay at some place that makes you unhappy.
You were at the 911 job for a very long time, and it can take a while for you to find something you like.
There's no need to put anything on your resume from high school or earlier.

If you want, send me your resume. I work on them for my students a lot and can probably give you some tips.

Well the PD was my first "real" job, full time, and not while I was in high school. So I didn't want to go out and just have that on my resume, but i guess I put too many things. I kind of liked my varied job experience, I thought it showed I'm good with a variety of things, but I guess not. Now that I'm on my second job since leaving the PD, I feel a bit more comfortable taking off some of the previous jobs.

I think I am going to stay with the mobile dentists for a while at least, but if I need my resume tweaked for any reason I will be sure to contact you!

tehehe yeah. for the most part I have a good idea how old majority of the people on my FList are, so I could kind of keep in perspective how many jobs they've had = age.

Thank you for taking my poll! i love when people take my polls, even if they are way old!!!

Rick (my husband) and I still discuss this sometimes because for the 6 years we've been together he's had the same job and I've had 5 jobs - and 2 of those jobs were like 1/2 jobs for just a few days or weeks while i found something better.

i guess i have to stop job hopping at some point! :-(
