I want to share a special card today. Not that in itself it's anything spectacular, no, but it is for a very special person. Suffice it to say that without her patience and steadfast encouragement, I wouldn't have been able to get any writing done this year at all. I'm grateful you are in my life, bb! <333

The truth is, this snippet is a little more serious than it appears to be at first sight. You're right in saying that Daniel is no one to make any kind of judgment, but Daniel as a character in his own rights has his own flaws. Minding other people's business is one of them, even though he has a very specific angle at which he looks at things.
You are also correct when saying that a big piece of the story, namely the way they came together, is missing and it can't make a full picture without it. I knew it would be that way, and I'm sorry it had to be. I know it's confusing.
I'm not sure how much I can explain (I really want to), without giving out too much of what's mostly isn't even sketched yet. And it wouldn't do it justice. Will they be bondmates eventually? Yes. Will that happen the moment they come together? No. Spock has issues (once bitten, twice shy is part of them). Jim has issues of his own. Here and now, Spock cares about Jim's motivation more than he does about their current status. They need to work a lot of things out, even after they get together, before they can move on to happily ever after. Which doesn't mean they won't be romantic, or hot, or loving in between. ;)
You're not a downer, you're just reading me too well. With which, TBH, I am immensely pleased. <3

And yes, Daniel is only human and thus the main character in his own life, making him feel he has the right to say it like he sees it. In some ways that's lovely, especially how highly he regards Spock. I just felt so bad for Jim to have to hear something like that from a complete stranger. *snuggles Jimmy tight*
Anyway, I do appreciate that you're going slowly with them, that even once Spock and Jim are in a relationship they don't jump into being bondmates immediately. They have to work at it... like everyone else. But it does make the final, eventual, commitment of forever all the more precious and beautiful. I know you can make this work.

In this verse, Jim and Spock are pretty much hard-wire onto each other's happiness instead of their own and both of them carry way too much baggage to imemdiately see that they both can have exactly what they want and that's what will truly make the other happy. Not because of selflessness, but because they do want the same thing, exactly the same thing. They'll figure it out eventually, but given their respective background, it can't happen overnight.
I do hope things will be clearer once Arc V is up.
