Author's Note: This story was inspired by a great many things, including a wonderful manga by Gokurakuin Sakurako.

Joe was finishing scrambling eggs for Nick, who hadn’t yet woken up, yawning and scraping the eggs out of the pan and onto a plate. The toaster pinged and he placed the warm piece of toast on top of the eggs. He added a tangerine and lifted the plate to bring it to the bedroom when he felt his cell phone vibrate in his pocket.

Panic flooded through him at the possibility that it might be Mr. Jost, as Nick had convinced Joe not to go to work today either. He pulled the phone out of his pocket and let out a huge breath of relief when he saw that it was just Kevin. He set the plate down and answered the call.

“Hey, Joe,” he said. “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” Joe repeated. “How was work?”

“Oh, work was alright, it was very busy,” Kevin answered. “How was it after I left? I hope Nick doesn’t hate me,” he laughed.

Joe chuckled nervously. “Oh, no, he didn’t say anything about you,” he lied.

“Good, good,” Kevin said. “So, everything is good with Nick? Aside from his wound, it’s all perfect, right?”

Joe shrugged, then realized Kevin wouldn’t be able to see that through the phone, and said, “Oh, well, yeah. It’s perfect.”

Kevin chuckled. “You don’t sound very convincing.”

“No, really, everything is very good! I’m so happy to have him living with me. I’m happier than I’ve been ever since he disappeared.”

“That’s great. But it isn’t perfect, is it?”

Joe sighed and sat down at the table. He didn’t answer.

“I take that as a no,” Kevin said.

Joe ran a hand through his dark hair. “It’s just that… I’m a little worried about him,” he admitted, voice weak.

“Worried about what? Is there something wrong with his wound?”

“No, that’s not it…” Joe paused.

“Come on, you can tell me,” Kevin said in a softer voice. “Maybe I can help.”

“Well…” Joe started. “You have to promise not to tell anyone, okay?”

“Of course.”

“Okay, well… yesterday, before you came over, I found something in his clothes when I was doing his laundry…” Joe said. He sighed deeply. “It was drugs, Kevin. I’m not sure what it was specifically, but it was definitely drugs.”

There was a long pause. “Wow,” Kevin said. “To be honest, I’m not very surprised. He looked like a street kid from the start.”

“Kevin!” Joe complained.

“Sorry, sorry. I don’t mean to offend. Anyway, did you ask him about it?”

“Yeah. He poured it down the sink. I think it’s all gone now.”

“He poured it down the sink?”

Joe nodded against the phone. “Maybe that means he’s going to stop now that he’s here with me?” he suggested in a hopeful tone.

Kevin sighed. “Drug addicts can’t just stop using overnight, Joe, you know that. Maybe he should check himself into a rehab.”

Anxiety built up in Joe’s stomach. “No! I can’t have him be separated from us again… the last time he was in a hospital for an extended period of time he disappeared for seven years!”

“Okay, calm down, Joe. He isn’t going to disappear again. It was just a suggestion.”

Joe felt tears bubbling in his eyes. “I don’t know what to do…” he whimpered.

“Joe, are you crying? No, please don’t cry.”

Joe ignored his request and started sobbing, holding a hand against his eyes in a weak attempt to stop the flow of tears. “I’m sorry, I think I’m going to go now, Kevin. I need to think.”

“Okay, Joe. Please don’t be sad, though. I promise I’ll help you. It’ll be okay.”

Joe smiled a little at Kevins words. “Thanks. You’re a good brother. Goodbye.” He hung up the phone and laid his head in his folded arms on the table, muffling his sobs so he wouldn’t wake up Joe.

“You shouldn’t cry, brother,” Nick said from the doorway. Joe jerked up, surprised, and looked at Nick through blurry eyes. “I was eavesdropping,” Nick continued. He walked into the kitchen and sat beside Joe.

Joe didn’t know what to say as Nick leaned forward and wiped some of his tears away with his thumb. “Silly,” he said, “your eyes are all red and puffy now.”

It took a moment for Joe to finally clear his throat and stutter, “I-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to talk about you behind your back.”

Nick nodded slowly. “It’s okay. I just wish it hadn’t been Kevin.” He shrugged. “That guy doesn’t like me. This is just going to make him try to turn you against me.”

Joe shook his head. “Even if that happened, I wouldn’t let him. No one will ever come between us,” he said.

Nick regarded the wet smudges on his thumb and gritted out, “He thinks he knows best for you, but he just made you cry. What kind of brother can he be?”

“I’m a crybaby,” Joe explained. “When you left me I tried to turn into you so that I wouldn’t miss you as much. You were always the one to be emotional over silly things…”

“And now it’s you?” Nick asked.

Joe nodded. “Every part of me leads back to you,” he said. He looked away and felt like he may start crying again.

Nick smiled and held Joe's chin between his thumb and forefinger like the first day he came to live with him. Joe blinked up at him.

Nick smiled. “Baby brother,” he said. He leaned forward and kissed Joe.

Joe was stunned for a moment, frozen, before he jerked backwards. “Nick…?!” he exclaimed.

“Don’t say anything,” Nick said, leaning forward and kissing Joe again. Joe, in the midst of his shock, didn’t put up a fight as Nick kissed him passionately. The kisses soon led the two out of their chairs with Nick backing Joe against the kitchen wall. “Please, brother…” he said softly. “Don’t disobey me.”

Joe stared up, still frozen by his shock, at this new brother of his. “Nick…” he managed to whisper before Nick was softly kissing his face and neck. “Stop it… we’re siblings,” he said, barely audible, trembling.

Nick lifted his head and stared warmly into Joe’s identical dark eyes. “I’ve always wanted to do this with you, Joe.” He stopped kissing him and leaned down and hugged him below his shoulders, head against his chest, saying, “I love you, and you’re mine now,” happily and childishly.

“Nick…” Joe said softly, looking down at his little brother in confusion.

Nick looked up at him again. “I always wanted to meet you, brother. To see you, I threw away everything that held me back.”

Joe stared, unsure of what he meant.

“So, please… open up to me. Your body, your heart, everything. Give it all up to me.”
