1) Where are you from?
Hm. A fair enough first question. I should warn you that the answer gets complicated. Not to mention strange.
As for where I come from originally, I was born on a planet called Tauron, one of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. The distance from where you live ... well, let's just call it vast. The exact location doesn't matter so much anymore, not since the Cylons destroyed all the Twelve Colonies by nuclear bombardment. Those of us in space had to literally run for our lives. We're running still, which is how I wound up on my current home, the freighter ship Amalthea.
2) You have a pretty smile, do you like to smile?
*dimples* Why thank you, hon. Yes, I love to smile. You'd think in our current situation it would be impossible to find things to smile about, but somehow we find ways. Working with kids helps, I think ... I work with a group of people who look after the orphaned children in the fleet. The resilience of the young is such a cliché, and not always true, but they're just ... so alive. And I've always found a smile in life's quiet pleasures ... listening to music, joking with my staff, spending an evening with a good friend with benefits...
3) What advice do you have for someone like me?
Someone like you, hon? *thoughtful smile* Do you mean someone who's a young adult, gay, or trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life? Of course it really all boils down to the same issue, working out where you fit in the world. Nobody bothers to tell you that that's a lifelong process.
As for advice, probably the two best pieces I could give you would be to listen to yourself and take some chances. When I was your age I had all kinds of people telling me what I should do with my life, some well-meaning and some less so. But when you're not all that sure of yourself, it gets really easy to listen to someone who sounds confident, instead of taking a quiet minute to listen to what your heart's trying to tell you. It also gets easy to take the safe road, to do what's expected. But the best lessons I learned and the richest memories in my life came from taking some one eighty-degree turns and doing the unexpected, even (or maybe especially) when things didn't turn out as I thought they would.
4) What do you do for a Hobby?
What I do for a hobby these days is what I used to do for a living back home. I blend scents, perfumes mostly. I may be the only scent designer who survived the fall of the Colonies, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who was traveling with a stock of essential oils. Since most transactions are through the barter system, having something rare to trade comes in handy.
5) Do you have a family?
Ah ... *shadow crosses her eyes* I did, and I do. My family on Tauron- two daughters and a son from earlier marriages, my younger brother and his kids -I lost them during the Cylon attacks. *swallows and blinks back tears* Just a bare handful of statistics among the billions who died then. I have a small memorial to them in my room, and I try to write down every memory I can scrape up in my journal, but ... you can't grieve forever. The heart just won't support it. We're social creatures; we have to move on and make new connections.
So now ... *manages a wry smile* I have a family that consists of nearly a hundred and eighty kids of all ages, and my staff of around thirty caretakers and a few assistants. Not to mention the crew of the Amalthea. We all do our best to take care of and support each other, sometimes get on each others' nerves, and try to watch each others' backs. What more could you ask of a family? *warmer smile*
So if anyone feels up to answering a few questions, you know I won't be shy about asking them. And if you think of anything else you'd like to ask me, I won't be shy about answering either. *grins*
