Two more days of Portugal left... I have been spending lots of time in freezing cold water (Atlantic and pool at Kirsten's house) and remaining impervious to the sun's rays (I am still white). Had a bit of a cultural/exercise day yesterday when we walked all round Sintra and then climbed up the Moorish Castle to the highest pinnacle (nearly died) -- made up for it today by scoffing delicious and cheap cakes from the cake shop. Choice Portuguese phrases of the phortnight (hehe) include 'tosta mistas' (mixed toasties), 'proxima paragem, Carcavelos' (next stop, Carcavelos), and 'obrigad' (thank you). Communication with local inhabitants, understandably, is somewhat limited!

I played sober girl on Sunday whilst the others played World Cup drinking games cos I was overheated and dehydrated after being fried in the sun on the beach for FAR too long; the Catz lot do not share the CUCB natural affinity for shade-finding and prefer instead to bake themselves.
This did mean that I reaffirmed my position as domestic goddess - i.e. cleaning up after them all and sponging spilt cocktail out of Kirsten's parents' expensive rug, twice, when Sarah got a little over-expressive. Freya, I now understand how it feels to be sober and surrounded by drunken people, and I apologise for my past inebriations. *grins*

We have watched quite a bit of football actually; saw Portugal lose twice, despite my sporting of the flag round my shoulders; we drowned our sorrows with a potent (and potentially lethal, in my opinion) brew known now as TGVA (Tequila, Gin, Vodka and Absinthe) which was served in half pint glasses. Two half pints of pure spirit, mixed??? To be fair, Kirsten did ask the bar people for their 'worst' drink. That night was interesting. We had to climb back into the house because the front gates were locked!

Went to see The Breakup yesterday, cried far too much for a film. I hate it when films that appear to be romcoms turn out to be too close to real life and not escapist enough with sappy 'that'd never happen' endings, it traumatises me when my expectations are so cruelly dashed. It happened with 'Closer' too! I was muchos disappointed; I cried all the way home, which was quite odd. I don't really do the whole crying thing often, especially in public!

Have been steadily working my way through books; I polished off the two I'd bought from Borders for this holiday in the first three days, so had to devour (metaphorically) Kirsten's books; so far I've got through Bridget Jones Diary & its sequel (for the third or fourth time now) and am about to start reading Chocolat (again, third time).

Got to go cook dinner now pre-casino! A real casino; should be awesome. No doubt more chat at a later date.

Proxima paragem: the kitchen.
