Saw some crazy shit at San Francisco Zoo on Friday 12/22/06.
Took my folks to San Francisco Zoo that day.
2:00pm, cat feeding time at the "Lion House", where visitors came to watch the big cats receive their daily rations. 3 lions & 2 Siberian tigers came in to enjoy their meals of horse meat & rabbitts. Perhaps due to complacency, the zookeeper neglected to close the feeding holes after feeding the tigers. Upon conclusion of feeding, one of the zookeepers stood in front of the cages for some Q&A. As she anwered the endless stream of questions from the visistors, her right arm drifted ever closer to the open feeding hole of one of the cages.
Then Tatiana, a recently arrived Siberian tigress, decided in her twisted feline mind that it would a good idea to use the zookper's arm as a scratchpost. The deceivingly cuddly furball laying at the far end of the cage suddenly sprung into action & in a split second seized the zookeeper's right arm with her paws. The terrified zookeeper screamed in sheer agony as the cat proceeded to shred her arms with those 2" long claws. Panicking crowd stormed out of the door as other zookpers tried to fend off Tatiana. Took almost a minute before the derranged feline let go of her victim.
I stood there watching the event unfold, totally powerless to help. The best I could do was to stay out of the way as the paramedics arrived.
