As some of you guys know, I've been part of this organization called API Fellowships Program and we basically help researchers, or as we call it, public intellectuals, in the region to find new knowledge through cross-cultural exchange in Southeast Asia and Japan.
I'm proud to promote to you one of our fellows' lecture: "Mukhang Pera" by Ambeth Ocampo. This was a year long research done by Ambeth Ocampo in the last year under our fellowship program. It's on how bank notes have the power in nurturing national identity. You can get more details about
here. And while I've only heard bits and pieces of this through conversations with Dr. Ocampo, I'm quite sure hearing it in full length would be quite interesting! The basic concept is that bank notes help in shaping how we view ourselves as a nation. The heroes faces that we show, the landscapes that we feature, even the fish and the cow that we place at our notes all play a part in establishing who we are at our essence. Of course, this is part and parcel of the greater whole and I bet Ambeth can articulate this a lot better than I ever can!
What excites me about this is he actually went around the region and studied banknotes from Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and I think Singapore and so on! It's fascinating how something we just "spend" also plays a crucial part in our identity.
So if you have time this Saturday, June 25, at 3 p.m., catch Ambeth's lecture at the Ayala Musuem! Ticket prices are 350 for professionals and 200 for students. I'm quite sure it's worth it! :D So exciiiiited~~!!!
Anyhu, off to brave the raiiiin~~~!! o/
