his youth is constantly being capitulated on throughout the movie.

From what I remember of the original script, his costume for meeting Holdaway in the diner was going to be a high school letterman jacket.
(And interestingly, iirc, in the original script, Eddie suggests Pink was a dishwasher when he worked minimum wage as he mentions, and 'couldn't get' a waiter job; which plays in with the point you made about how he couldn't/didn't become wealthy legitimately.

I remember reading that jacket thing. And was thankful they didn't. But it would have definitely served its purpose, wouldn't it?
