You watch him slide out of the backseat, all artless grace and somber elegance, his hand white against the sleek black of the car. He blinks up at you and he says “Signor Reborn,” the Italian rolling slow and monotone off his tongue. In return, you cock your gun and point it at him, grin like a wolf and say, “ciao bella” in that nonchalant, infuriating way you have of making everyone hate you. But his expression doesn’t change, he doesn’t bristle, only regards you with unimpressed calm as he walks up the steps. You’re leaning against the doorframe, so he has to turn sideways to edge through. Your bodies don’t touch, though you’re close, and he pauses, one foot over the threshold, looks at you and says coolly, “excuse me,” this time liquid Mandarin, and you watch him in the corner of your eye, amused. He’s almost as tall as you are, though his shoulders are narrow, and his footsteps are perfectly silent.
He nods at the others gathered in the sitting room and chooses a seat between Viper and Lal Mirch, closes his eyes and sits statuesque. You follow and settle into an armchair, prop your feet up on the coffee table and pull your hat over your eyes, listening to the dull hum of a conversation trying its best not to be about the end of the world tomorrow.
You wait, and one by one, starting with Skull, the others wander off to bed to toss and turn the night away until you’re the only two left. You push your hat up and look over, wonder if he fell asleep sitting rigid like that, but then he opens his eyes to stare at your feet. He blinks once, and that’s all he does to show his distaste.
