Nap Help!

Calling all mommies (or whoever!)... I need some ideas. Any suggestions are welcome... I may not try them, but I'd like to hear any ideas.

Here's the issue: Luke is fighting his afternoon nap.

He sleeps great at night, and even goes down for his morning nap fairly easily. However, for the past few weeks his afternoon nap has become a struggle. Sometimes he'll just play. He'll walk around the crib, pull down his mobile (which has now been removed), stand and sing, and throw his little blankie out of the crib. Other times he'll cry, usually standing up. I guess most of the time it's a combination of the two. Eventually he might fall asleep after at least an hour sometimes two, and sometimes I give up and he skips the nap.

Here's what I've tried:
Waiting for it to pass - You know, maybe it's just a phase. He's learned to pull up and cruise, so he's been practicing in his crib. Once it's no longer new he'll sleep again. (It's been at least 2 weeks, maybe 3... and he goes to sleep in the morning and at bed time just fine)
Putting him to bed earlier.
Putting him to bed later.
Getting him nice an sleepy - nursing him, rocking him etc. (Once he was practically asleep from nursing.. I put him in his bed... 5 minutes later I hear him babbling and crawling around)
Leaving him alone.

I'm out of ideas. Some have thought he might be ready for one nap. If so, shouldn't he be fighting the morning nap? The one that happens only 2 hours after a full nights sleep? Last comment - I really think he is tired, but he just won't sleep. He'll rub his eyes and be cranky one minute and the next he's crawling around like a madman... er... baby.
